How to: Remove the engine cover

Recommended Posts

Removing the engine cover

- remove the ignition leads from the engine cover , tip - mark which lead they are so they go back on to the cover in the right order so that Seat dont know that you have taken them off ( they just pull off just make sure you dont accidentally pull to hard and then pull them out at either ends

- pop the covers that cover the bolt holes ( watch you dont loose them )

- unbolt the two big bolts ( they dont actually come out of the cover )

- then theres a sort of ball joint type of idea at the back of the engine cover and thats what holds it on at the back so just give it a tug ( it will be a bit stiff so just give it a bit of persasion (sp ??) and it will pop off , it will come ) then as you take it out the oil breather pipe will come as well , dont worry about it . also you will have to disconect two small rubber pipes at the back of it on the right hand side near the firewall and then a big fat pipe on the left hand side ( there just push pull fits so they go back on easy ) and then lift the cover off the car

- if you are going to drive the car ( like i did ) put a leg of a pair of tights over the throttle body and hold it down with an elastic band (you could always use a sock but make sure theres no sock fluff that can be injested by your engine )

you can now pull the cover apart to get the to get to the air box

to put the cover back on

- offer up the cover to the engine making sure that the throttle body lines up with the whole in the engine cover ( at this point the oil breather pipe finds its own way back to where it goes )

- push the back half of the engine over down so that it pops back on to the ball joint things that hold it on ( you should hear a slight click / pop noise when its in )

- re-connect the two pipes on the right hand side , and then the one on the left ( they can be a bit fiddely but they do go back on )

- screw the engine cover back down with the two big bolts

- replace the caps on the cover

- refit the ignition leads

jobs a good'un !

Key

lime green circle - caps that cover the two bolts that hold the engine cover down

light blue circles at the back - this is roughly where on the under side of the engine cover the ball joint things are

yellow X - this is roughly where on the underside where the throttle body is

big red circle - this is the big oil breather pipe when putting the cover back on this pipe finds its own way back and will come away from the engine with the cover

dark blue circle at the front - this is the pipe that comes out of the exhaust manifold that connects into the engine cover but theres no fitting on it , just ignore it but make sure it lines up ok when you put the cover back on

pink arrows - this is where i recon you were saying about some screws , these are the screws that take the cover apart but you cant get to them to take the cover apart untill you have taken the whole engine cover off

blue arrows - this is the rough location of where the push fit pipes are to the cover that was mentioned above ( make sure they come off at the engine cover side as they are a ****** to try and get to from there other end
