mk2 Posted July 14 Report Share Posted July 14 All CL admin has just been notified by the website host that the software that runs this forum is being discontinued in December... @MattyB knows whats going on better than I. Basically any forum with this software will go dead. i don't know if the new version will allow all the old messages, posts, links, pics etc to be saved. Any ideas anyone? MattyB Posted July 14 Report Share Posted July 14 It just means they're ending V4 support completely - no updates, no security updates. They released version 5 about a year ago, so they've likely been overlapping both version for a while, but will be pushing everyone to V5 and sunsetting V4. Alas, as per my notes when we did the last server migration, I do have concerns about how viable this will be to maintain, as it's reliant on older versions of core components like PHP, and there is a risk that these themselves will have vulnerabilities as I can't update those. The two alternatives are A - $500 one off, + $200/year to upgrade to the new V5, which isn't sustainable on a forum with this little traffic; or B - a migration to a free product like PhpBB, but that could potentially lead to a lot of data loss. So in short, no immediate concerns over the above alert, but and I'll cross the bridge regarding the version we're on when we hit a road block! mk2 Posted July 15 Author Report Share Posted July 15 Ok, so sounds like I misunderstood the implication of 4 to 5 migration. A bit like windows 10 to 11. Will still work, but the security features will just end. Fingers crossed then. I guess we simply need to have a LOT more advertising clicks. If forum users use the browser addon "adnauseam" (I do), do those simulated clicks feed through to the revenue stream to help cover the site costs?
