Lupo Steering Wheel Removal Q's

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

First off, I'm aware there's already a tutorial on how to remove and replace the steering wheel. I just have a couple of questions.

I have a Lupo SE steering wheel to replace the original. I understand that i'd need to have the centre cover off (which holds the airbag) so I can bolt it on and connect everything. However, and this is before removing the original so the SE wheel is still not attached to a car, I just can't seem to get the lovely person off! I've used several types of flatheads, all kinds of angles, pressed against the airbag and had no luck with any of it.

I think i already know the answer to this ever so hopeless question.. but just wondering if there were any tips anyone could give, that aren't what I said above.

Thanks for reading!

-Adam.

I disassembled the steering wheel twice when changing the levers. I did exactly as in the photo and it worked. A few observations from what I remember because it's been quite a while since then:
- a small mirror would help
- where that wire comes into contact with the airbag hook is a kind of metal clip that makes it a bit confusing to pass the wire over the hook (that clip doesn't appear in the drawing)
- after the wire has released the hook you have to pull the airbag quite hard

Thanks all, clips are off! Will begin removing the existing wheel later on.

If I encounter anything abnormal then I'll get in touch.

You two have been incredibly helpful, thank you so much!IMG_0928.thumb.jpeg.4a500337477dd78392d095fef8324adf.jpeg

Right, good news is steering wheel is on, but bad news theres an airbag light and it just wont go. Error code 00588, most likely clockspring or faulty connection to the airbag.

I went to steer on full lock to park up, and heard a big click, after that the light come on. Any ideas there?

Do we think going back to the original may solve the problem? I've checked everywhere and nothing looks broken, still a bit worried if I've done something by accident..

Yep. You broke the clock spring... I guess you've already looked up how it works. Internal spiral ribbon cable connection. Easy enough to find a replacement at the breakers or even new.

Steering wheel off again...
