Adjusting Xenon Lights and Self leveling

Recommended Posts

So since I finally got vagcom to work I tried adjusting my headlight after I had a shop change the bulbs and the adjuster motors inside the headlights as well as replacing the bad sensor in the back with a good used one.

I did notice that it does go up and down when I sit in the car or get out, but the driver side headlight (passenger side in the UK) is a lot lower then the other side.

So I went into vag com and selected the range Control unit and then manually tried adjusting the headlight with the white plastic screws. the right headlight goes very far up and down and very quick and easily too, but the left one doesn't go up very high but it does go down very far, when going down it's very fast and easy too, but when I go up it goes up very little with each turn, until I end up not being able to turn it any more.

After I got them level and saved that in vag com I noticed they don't adjust anymore when I get in and out of the car. when I hit the left headlight with my hand, the right headlight motor moves up and down but goes back to the same position as before.

Are the new motors bad?

Are the lamp modules inside the headlights easy to move with your fingers? Could be that they simply need a drop of silicone lube or something...?

I don't recall my headlights moving up and down when they are switched on, I don't think the system is that advanced to do a self-level check. The only other thing I can think of is that they haven't fitted the range control motors correctly, they have a ball and socket kind of attachment to the headlamp, if they aren't locked in correctly, the lens can move freely on its own.

No I don't mean that it does a self level check when turned on, it just adjusts based on if I'm sitting on it or not, because the suspension drops down a bit when I get in. I can hear the motors too, or rather used to hear them, since I did the vag com adjustment I can't hear them anymore

How would I go about testing this, do I need to take my bumper off for this.

I guess my main issue is that I can't get the left headlight high enough, by the time I get to where it's at the highest, the plastic screw gets hard to turn so I guess I reached the end of the adjustable range.

Been having some bad luck with finding a good shop to work on my cars, they changed all the parts but then didn't aim the beams

Okay, I adjusted the left one back down to where it was originally and now they both do go up and down again when I run an output test. but the left is just way too low.

is it possible that the left one is installed upside down or something

Got the previous shop to fix my headlight you can now adjust it with the screws.

I adjusted them with vag com, you can see that when I'm outside the car it the measuring blocks for 002 shows 1.2-1.4°

when I'm sitting inside it shows 0.5°

which means the sensor in the back is working.

The motors work fine as well, because I ran a test and they went down and up.

but the headlights don't adjust regardless of if there's weight added to the back or not. they stay at the same position. Do I have to be actually driving for the headlights to adjust?

I am wondering if they have fitted the motors correctly.... Like I said before, the adjuster motor has a ball joint on the end of it that slides into a recess on the back of the headlight lens. If this isn't located correctly, it will be pushing the lens downwards, stopping any adjustment.

I do think the motors are fitted correctly now. I ran an output test and they went down and up without any problems and they are also correctly aimed now. I can also manually adjust them even higher than they are now if I wanted to.

I checked under the car for the sensor, the part that connects to the rear axle was mounted slightly wrong so I fixed that and then recalibrated the headlights.

I managed to see very very slight movement of it regulating, but I had to put a ton of weight in the back for this. I had about 20kg in the boot and myself on the rear seat (80kg) and even then it regulated only a little, I feel like it should have regulated down more than that.

My problem is that I am not passing inspection just because of this now. The inspector told me he can't see any movement of the headlight regulating and that's why he won't let me pass.
