Lupo GTI Ball Joints

Evening,

My Lupo GTI has failed it's MOT due to the front suspension arm ball joints, n/s & o/s.

Tried all the ball joints you can find online when you search for them, but they don't fit the GTI, despite saying they do in the parts description.

If anyone's had this issue before, or replaced any ball joints before and would be able to help me source some, that would be greatly appreciated.

LET ME KNOW!

Cheers,

Even though I don't own a GTi, I have a feeling they are they exact same as Polo 9N ball joints. @Rich and I and a few others here on CL were researching the similarities.

If you can accurately measure one of yours (pics?), I still have an old 9N polo BJ sitting on my bench for reference.

Regular Lupo BJs have a 10mm thread and a smaller cone.

Welcome to Club Lupo :)

pics of car?

It's been mine for about a year and a half since i started driving.  Driving experience is nuts in these things😍 Fast for what they are...got 199kmh in mine recently.

Mileage is 178,106km - it's km because its a Japanese import!

I like them unmolested and that’s a nice example. Any pics of your ball joints??

RTS ones are the only ones that fit afaik. Checkout info on Lupo GTI Facebook page. I've just fitted them to mine. All ok but note they must be fitted opposite side i.e. one marked L on RHS of car. It's true honest.

Morning,

I sent over the link to this thread over to the garage and they've been able to find some RTS ones.  They ordered one and it fits so now just to order the other one and it should finally be back on the road!

Don't forget L to RHS, R to LHS. 🙂

I have the same problem trying to buy a pair off Lupo GTI lower suspension arm ball joints. You say RTS fit. Can anyone give me RTS part numbers please. The garage haven't had success with the complete arms they fitted. They retracked to car so I could get it home. Most the suppliers show the same pics and are wrong. Only hope I've had on ebay may be with Febi bilstein, but using vw nos 6E0407365/6 with local motorfactors have got the wrong joints.

It's a super little car, belongs to the wife who no longer wants to drive. 2 owners. Mileage around 67,000. Just trying to correct a few advisories on the MoT

Any advice will be appreciated.

If someone has an old Gti ball joint, can they measure it? I'm certain that they the exact same as Polo 9N types, but without the dimensions I just don't know. I have a couple of spare 9N joints I can compare with...

turn the unit upside down - baseplate 85mm wide , 96mm long from middle lug to far side of base of ball unit, base centre hole to centre of pin approx 69mm.

pin 10mm thread, taper 15mm.

hope that helps a little

Hmm. That sounds exactly like the regular Lupo ball joint. I have a new regular one somewhere, which I'll measure too. The Polo 9N uses a 12mm threaded taper ball fitment from memory (and a bigger taper cone). I thought Gti's use a 12mm thread?

I've bought several ball joints listed for the Gti. Returned them all but here is one from Napa shown alongside the RTS joint. Underside view shows the difference best. GTis are 10mm threaded. Underside shows the R which is the passenger side and matches my old passenger side original joint but with no slot. L on the underside is the driver side.

Got a pic the other way up, with the thread pointing upwards? It 'does' look like a 9N ball joint from below.

I'm just thinking, I wonder if the threaded part is important- as in, the purpose is simply to pull in the cone into the hub carrier. If it uses the larger cone, my guess is that a 12mm thread will fit through the hole. Unless the cone is longer and the pointy end is smaller?
