Lupo GTI 6spd Gearbox in 20v Conversion

Hi All,

This will be my first post so please dont send me to the gallows straight away.

To keep it short, im lining up a parts list for a 20v conversion on my GTI (2004, Jap import, 70k miles) ( purists will hate me but hey im 22 XD)

I have an ARY engine, with box (6spd/O2M) 82K miles.

and an AGU Engine and box with 112K miles.

Looking at mounts and exhsuats and all that stuff, im wondering if i can just swap the bell housing from an O2M/O2J/A with the current 6 speed box. This would surly eliminate the need for notches, a new peddle box, i can use the same sump/exhuast run (mani will be different but it can join at the same place so it clears everything)

Am i just doing to melt the box or do people think it would hold? im aiming for 250bhp (i've not considered torque though, dose anyone know the threshold?)

Im not worried about top speed and all that, i quite enjoy the shifting sension every 3 seconds i currently get  out of my GTI, plus i've seen 142 on the needle which is more than enough if my stripped down bean can.

any infor or pointers are appreciated.

The bolt flange will mount up fine, but things you need to watch are engine angle, sump an that sort of stuff. Exhaust and such easy. Same for controls like gear shifter and pedals. ECU and wiring is usually the most tricky bit because of lack of decent info available. Check flywheel and starter engagement setup too. Clutch.

Most gearboxes can handle the power. The torque is the thing you need to limit to stop them going bang. Same for the CV joints. I'd still rebuild the box (bearings) before running the car to it's full potential though.

Start a build thread we can all follow, with lots of pics please! Oh and welcome to CL :)

I wasnt expecting a response so quickly!! thank you :)

I have both looms, i know vagtronics do a good job of splicing the two together so for the sake of a few £ i will most likely go down this route... I know VW do an "upgrade kit" for the polo box, ill have  to digg around and see if there is anything similar for the lupo or ill just have to start from scratch as i cant imagine the market is massive.... i think ill get the engine in, swap the box housings over and offer it up loose and see how it fits and go from there...  i can see a lot of trial and error.

Ive sent a few driveshafts to the grave already so i've started using golf/lupo hybrids that we made up, holding up a treat so far. nurburgring and a few track days with no issues.

I'll make sure to start a thread!

No, you can't use the box.

Use an 02j or a. Will be fine.

You don't have to change the pedal box at all.

I even remember reading recently that someone managed to use the Lupo potentiometer in a 20v conversion so that doesn't even need ****ing with.

Gear selector is fine but if you use an 02a then it needs an 02j tower in it.
