Gearbox whine

I have a 1ltr lupo y reg with a full history and only 50k on the clock but it has developed a gearbox whine mostly in 3rd and 4th speed.

At first I thought it sounded more like a wheel bearing but garage said its gearbox.

Changes gear really well so I am surprised it's gone or going and apparently its bearing noise so do you think we should live with it till it gets worse or look for a recon box.

Any thoughts welcome

Thanks

Most Lupo's have 085 gearboxes and conical bearings at the end of shafts starts to make sound because of wear out, starts to sound similar to gearboxes with straight cut gears, they whine, you can especially hear that in low speed.

The only way to solve it is to open the gearbox and replace the bearings, but it is not easy repair, therefore it is cheaper to replace the gearbox with another used one. INA(~100£) and VW OEM (~300£) bearings are available for these gearboxes, but it will coast at least 500£ in labour and almost none will agree to do the work.

I have heard a lot of these gearboxes dies straight after you change the oil.

A guy told me these gearboxes needs 500ml extra oil, thats 3,2l instead of 2,7l, but he didn't explain it to me and I havent tried to fill that much oil in my gearbox yet (I am aware older 085 gearboxes needed 3,1l oil, but thats not the same)

Don't drive it one second if it's whining. It's still salvageable. Hopefully.

A new set of bearings costs about £100 and takes a good gearbox place about 2h to replace them. Then you'll get another 100k miles out of it. I'll see if I can find pics of what happens inside it. I've had two of my lupo gearboxes rebuilt for the same reason. :)

Where are you? There are a few well known Lupo gearbox places in the UK that members have recommended. It cost me £50 and a tin of chockies to get mine done. I watched and took pics while he was working.

found some pics showing how the bearings go...

This is the diff bearings. Easy enough to replace, but you need a puller to get the 5th gear off first. If you can't select 4th or 5th, it's because the bearing right under the 5th cog is loose, so there's too much slack to select it.

1st step is to get the gearbox out. Then drain the oil so it's ready to work on.

Don't worry about cleaning it. Most places have an automatic hot wash tank.

Another member on here isn't far from you in Kent (trying to remember who) and knows somewhere that has a good reputation.

But before buying the new bearings (I use ebay- 085 gearbox bearing kit), it's worth opening up the gearbox to make sure it's not too far gone. Put it this way, it's already broken, so any work will only make it better! While out, you may as well change the clutch plate and release bearing- if you're thinking of keeping the car more than a couple of years.

Our local place is a 4h round trip for you.

Thats amazing price, I have had 500£ offers from services where they offered to remove the gearbox as well, therefore I replaced the gearbox myself, without rebuilding the "new" one, almost 40 000km and still works fine. I store a spare gearbox at home, which havent been rebuilt yet, I will look for possibilities to do it.

You can find bearing part numbers on 7zap. I recomend to replace the following:

Funny, I just discovered 311405625N is same like inner hub bearing from Audi A4 (B5) rear wheel.
