Trims
Has anyone looked at replacing the insulation on the inside of the engine cover?
mk2
Yeah. Forget any artificial foams, felts or fibres... The only stuff that I find works in cars is Jute based insulation. About 12mm thick, black on one side with the natural fibres on the other side. Cut it with a kitchen knife! Quite stiff, but you can mould it a bit. High temp contact adhesive needed. https://www.boyriven.co.uk/Catalogue_Automotive_main.pdf Edited February 6, 2020 by mk2
Skezza
Does anyone actually bother on an SDI. They're agricultural as hell, foam or not.
Trims
It seems that the early Arosas and 6N Polo SDis didn't have engine covers at all! Had a look at the Boyriven website. Might have to look more in detail at the specification of underfelt for this type of application. Trims
Update: Have made a template from the VW original foam shape. The original seems to be a fairly thin, open cell construction foam.
Trims
Used automotive grade, self-adhesive open cell foam, single thickness sheet, similar to the original shape. Not perfect, but it looks as if it's only the TDI that has the foam as a separate item. While posting ... what's the arm extension with slots on the front left cover mounting bracket supposed to be for? Currently I have extra material so could possibly do another if anyone wants one fitted. PM me.
mk2
Arm extension slots... What do you mean? Pic...?
Trims
Bracket with two vertical slots in it part of the mount for the rubber picture taken from the front of the car with the bracket having been bent round to stop it rubbing the insulation. mk2
Got what you mean now. Yeah, they're for the 1.9 version (tdi). There are some extra bits for additional mechanicals. As you know, the 1.7 SDI is in fact a 1.9 engine fitted with a different crank... almost a straight swap. @battlebus is the most recent person to do that job. Rocket with 180hp or something silly. And through the fragile little 085 box. Woah!
Trims
Thanks. Yeah that makes sense. Couldn't think of anything additional for this engine bay.
