Timing belt kit and water pump - where to buy?

Recommended Posts

Ebay... buy everything separately and get real bargains... Just did one of my SDIs the other day. With belt, pump, tensioner and idle pulley- came to £26 in bits all up. Do some cross referencing- for example, a belt can be about £6, with a ford label on it. New, old stock. Same belt, different label :)

You got any Ebay item numbers from the ones you purchased mate? I'm happy to buy separately.

Yeah, go to the perfect part, scroll down and look at their cross references. Then do another search using them.

Here you go. Found the most expensive bit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/163959458881 Just do a check on the part number :)

thanks. cant find the perfect part mind, just some american phone company and the usual GSF, Eurocarparts etc.

To get the OEM numbers I use these links below. Then on ebay pages I use the seller cross references to get equivalent part numbers. Then type those in and hey presto, you've found parts nobody else has seen, at massively discounted prices...

Just remember that like all manufacturers, VAG use parts going back years which are still fine. For example, the Lupo inner CV joint is the exact same as fitted to the old beetle from the 70's. So you can buy that instead. Same part, different part number. Identical fitment. £5 instead of £15.

The first 3 digits denote chassis or platform type, the next 6 are the part number, the letter is variant. So if you can find the same 6, ignore the first 3 (with caution), then check what the variant is by the letter. The letter is usually the one that catches people out.

Now you know my secret. :)

Sensible. It's not the easiest thing to do. I have a couple of extra pics and tips to add to my "how-to" sdi cam belt change thing. I noticed removing the crank pulley was a pain. There was a film of rust on the crankshaft spigot which jammed when trying to pull off the pulley. I ended up using some rust remover just to get the damn thing off... not easy. Lots of cursing. Can't use a puller as it's alloy.
