NajitsirK Posted October 15, 2019 Report Share Posted October 15, 2019 (edited) Right so I'm planning to do a Aug 1.8t conversions on my lupo around next year, and I will not be reporting it to my insurers as my insurance will go up by a lot so car will still be registered as 1.4. So my question is, if someone happens to crash into me will police or insurance really even bother looking what engine I have? And what are consequences etc. I have driver a Corsa B 1994 with vauxhal cavilier conversion before and that was registered as 1.4, I didn't have a problem, but its good to know more info before I do it. mk2 Posted October 15, 2019 Report Share Posted October 15, 2019 (edited) From my limited knowledge on the subject as I've not had an accident yet (!), if people are injured or killed (as in there may have been a crime committed), then they look at everything - including light switch position, wiper switch position, tyre pressures, brake fluid level, wiper condition, tread, brakes pads & discs, seat mounting, steering condition and fluid levels, air in injector rails and fuel pipes etc etc. Basically, anything that affects safety and behaviour of the car. If you have lied to them by not declaring an engine conversion (because they WILL ask if the car has any modifications) You will have void insurance, and depending on the circumstances, you could end up in prison. dont be a dick. declare it. I wouldn't necessarily do a logbook declaration, but if you fail to declare and even if someone totals your car whilst parked up, they will still void your policy. Just buy a car with a 1.8T as supplied by OEM cheaper in the long run. Simply strip it out to an almost bare shell. Completely legal (although uncomfortable). weslangdon Posted October 16, 2019 Report Share Posted October 16, 2019 If for example you swap a 200 plus bhp engine into a 75bhp Lupo you will find chassis and brakes overwhelmed and yes you are more likely to kill someone, if it were just yourself say on a race circuit then who cares but on the British roads, forget it. NajitsirK Posted October 16, 2019 Author Report Share Posted October 16, 2019 Don't wanna waste money on high insurance that's all and I drove fast cars before anyhow, I asked what's will happen anyway what I should do, and it's not like I'll do conversion and keep standard breaks, they will be upgraded to bigger ones besides right at this moment Im thinking it will be project car for santa pod it's too much hassle after all with insurance and I don't fancy going jail, thanks for the help. LR5V Posted October 16, 2019 Report Share Posted October 16, 2019 The big issue is if you cause an accident and they find undeclared mods you may become un-insured - potentially liable for the damages. Plus your insurance would be cancelled and put on the naughty list the insurance companies now distribute making it very difficult to get any insurance going forward. discrete mods, you could get away with, but a 1.8t conversion is far from discrete. the mad max quote: “speed is a question of money... how fast can you go?” Is very pertinent here.
