Front seatbelts don't like retracting back in. Why?

Recommended Posts

Just about every Lupo I've seen has front seat belt problems. They just don't like retracting. Haven't figured out why just yet, but I guess that this is a very common problem. If you manually feed the belt back up, it reels in no problem. Locking is fine as does the inertia reel lock system.

Has anyone had a look at what's going on? Anyone had the same issues and successfully sorted them? What causes it?

Retract it and soak in a bucket overnight.

Silicone spray along the belt and work back and forth.

The angle the reel is at seems to do the trick as well.

Tried silicone. Nope. No different.

But soak the reel of belt material in what? What are we trying to do?

Clean the human filth and grease off it.

Ah. Ok, sounds like it needs a good soak in some biological clothes detergent. Will try it next week.

The extreme cleaning method is pressure washer - with the belts out of the car - at a reasonable distance... too close and the nylon starts to fray - don't ask how I know!

Doesn't even need asking.

GTI belts seem to get dirty very easily, I watched a vid on YouTube where the guy retracted them out and left them in a bucket of water with washing machine detergent in it for an hour or so, let them dry out and then showed them retracting in properly.

Can't beat washing up liquid for removing grime and grease.

I destroyed the rear lap belt on Red Mk3 Anniversary belt - going too close with the pressure washer - the difference in feel of the belt changes considerably after they are cleaned.

Pressure washing internal carpets (out of the car) is good too... but I draw the line at seats

Seats are fine.

Just don't be stupid whilst doing it.
