Botanic
Hello, I'm about to replace my faulty alternator. I haven't started yet as I want to prepare as much as possible since it's very cold outside. The one I have is 70A. I ordered a 70A alternator but received 90A. My guess is that they are interchangeable and I'm good to go? I have read this great post: https://forums.clublupo.co.uk/index.php?/topic/92672-how-to-replace-alternator-includes-pics/ But I realized that the alternator is too big to remove without removing something else first, unless there is room underneath the car that I can't see. See picture: https://imgur.com/a/m7R0BNP I have read this discussion about the SDI: But my engine is a 1.4 petrol and I really hope it's easier to replace. Which parts do I have to remove in order to get the old alternator out and the new one in? Is it enough to remove the long plastic part that goes on top of the headlights? How do I remove it? Any pointers are greatly appreciated. Edited February 22, 2019 by Botanic

lupogtiboy
When I did the alternator on my GTI, I had to loosen the 3 engine mount bolts on the top to lower the engine down enough to allow access to the bottom alternator bolt. Was pretty easy once I'd figured that out!

Botanic
Thanks for the replies, but I still don't understand how much and how to remove things from the front.
Rich
Remove everything attached the alternator and pry bar it free, wiggle it about and see if it will come out, top or bottom. If it comes out it will go back in. I think there's enough room in a 1.
