Costa91
Hello everybody. New here. Just brought my first car today. Lovely vw lupo 53 reg. The engine sounds good. The problem that I have, and I am really concerned about it because is the first car I have and I really want to start knowing all that I need about it. As they say if you take good care of your car, she will take good care of you. Jumping to the problem , the clutch is really heavy and sometimes in reverse it makes a wiring noise and it doesn't move at all. It doesnt happen all the time . I hope is not something serious . Maybe someone can give me some sugestions, as I am a complete newbie when it comes to cars. Kind regards , Constantin
weslangdon
You need to tell us the model and the mileage there are few things it could be, all fairly common issues, pedal box, clutch release bearing, gear selectors, failing gearboxes. That list sounds quite bad but these are really the only things that do go wrong on a Lupo/Arosa
D_A_N
Not to undermine Wes's knowledge of lupos as I'm new here too but i'm fairly mechanically minded but if your not dont worry too much I think reverse synchros in alot of cars are a bit iffy I've had multiple cars where you have to rev it a little or select reverse a few times even my impreza some times will only select reverse with a crunch especially when cold, and I know the train in that car is all true. But also as Wes Says more specific details will help people on the forum diagnose the problem could just be you need to do a oil change/top up on your box or one of the issues mentioned before. ^
weslangdon
Fair comment, and to be honest I've had all these problems in only 1 car an Arosa Sport so probably unfair to tar the lot with all of these issues; but a stiff clutch can lead to a broken pedal box and in tandem to gear selection issues, a cascade effect
Costa91
Hi again. Really sorry for the late reply. I was so busy with work I even forget about date. If you asked me on monday what date we are in, I couldn't even tell you haha. Back to the subject. Thank you very much for taking your time and trying to help me. Is a 53 reg, vw lupo e ,1 l engine. It has 97.000 miles on it. My friend owned the car and he took really good care about it. He brought a big one because of the family and luckly I got it from him. The engine sounds really nice. The cambelt was changed at 84.000. Im in love with the car. The cluth it seems is starting to engage when I press the pedal around half way. Is really stiff. Sometimes because of this I stall the engine. The fustration is big.( I know I blame the clutch xd ). Well probably both. The thing with the reverse I noticed if I push a bit harder it does work without any problems. Probably me being a newbie didn't properly put it in reverse. Just brought a bonet bra for it and ordered a pair of arch fenders. I can't wait to put them on. Alloy wheels are next but they are a bit expensive so I need to save up a bit. Sorry for the long post, but I really like talking about it xd Edited October 19, 2016 by Costa91
weslangdon
have a look at these threads on a heavy clutch http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forums/topic/316912-clutch-problem-or-pedal-box/ neither gives a clear cut answer but the 2nd is better, I'd guess its the clutch release bearing that means gearbox off and new clutch

What do you mean by gearbox off ? It sounds similar with the first video on that thread. The noise is a bit lower than that. I just went outside for a fast recording. weslangdon
just that gearbox needs to be taken off to replace the clutch; get your local vw specialist to have a look, they should be familiar with the issue from both Lupo's and Polo 6n2's. Yours doesn't sound that bad so the stiffness is most likely clutch, better to fix it before the pedal box is affected
