lizzy
I'm having to top up the coolant on my arosa tdi, but can't see any signs of leaks. Anyone any suggestions?
Pete
Can you be more specific?
Dubster
How much is it using? When the engine is hot, can you see any bubbling in the coolant expansion tank?
Sausage
if you cant see any obvious leaks then check the cap on the expansion tank for a good seal and also the carpets around the heater matrix and the exhaust for excessive white smoke (smell it for antifreeze) you'd probably have hard coolant pipes and bubbles in the expansion tank too if head gaskets going. Take the top of the cambelt cover off and have a good look at the water pump for drips too. Grazza
do an oil change and make sure it isn't going in the sump, how much are you topping up and how frequently? (how many miles between top up)
Pete
Dunno if you've been asked or not but how much are you losing over what period of time...??
lizzy
Probably using about a litre every 4k miles. The coolant in the expansion tank is clean. Wouldn't this be grubby if the head gasket had gone?
Sausage
That's quite a small leak so it could be a pin hole in the radiator, most will evaporate so you dont get a handy puddle to help you find it. A garage should be able to do proper tests to find it, pressure test, coolant and exhaust gas analysis. If not then you will have to do some sleuthing of your own to track it down. lizzy
Actually it could be more than I quoted, but no more than a litre every 2k. But thanks everyone for the help anyway I'll have a proper look over the weekend.
