Special tool (?) for alternator tensioner AND tools for hose clips

Recommended Posts

Some questions,

When I did my alternator, I removed the pulley belt by putting a 17mm socket on a long bar and pulled it toward me.....I then removed the tensioner to get to the 2 long bolts for the alternator. This was related to a thermostat change.

That aside, the square block on the tensioner was damaged a little bit, as the metal must be quite weak. i.e the socket dug into it.

Out of interest, how does anyone else release their tension ? (this not related to kylie calenders etc, talking cars here!). Is there some kind of special tool? Doh....just a spanner!

Also, for hose clips? Can anyone recommend a good set of pliers DESIGNED for this job? i was using some draper water pump pliers, but they just seem to slide, so you don't get a good grip on the hose clamp.....else was going to whip them off and just use a jubilee clip !

Just found these.....

Hose clips : I have some rubber handled pliers and cutters... By using these the opposite away around and squeezing the clips with the inner of the handle it works easily enough and saves having to get a new tool you're more than likely not going to use that often.

I use large mole grip for the spring type hose clips, does the job, keep your fingies well away though...

If i was going to buy a tool for it though i'd get the remote type with a cable on it, miles easier to use.

Yeah, had seen these, so you have confirmed by thoughts about this.....these look good as it frees up a hand etc.....I spend ages with a slippery air pipe the day by the sump, all down to not being to hold the dam thing and reconnect it all easily...was do-able, but just a struggle....I have a T5 too so investing in a couple of time saving tools is money well spent if they work properly ! thanks
