wehey
Hiya all. After recently buying a tdi I am keen to do a service (oil, air and fuel filters)I have been searching around and have found a huge variety of prices especially for the air filter. (£10 to£50)Is it worth spending the extra on genuine vw/seat items or the aftermarket "cheapies" good enough for the job.As an example, on eBay you can buy air, fuel and an oil filter for £21 but I am always a bit sceptical about the quality?....confused.com

Although the most important factor in a tdi is getting the pd505.01 oil Is it0.1 or just 505 i cant remember but get the right oil. Try to go for the best company you can on cp4l.

Is this oil commonly available i.e somewhere like Halfords? Or is it specifically for VW'sIs the pd505 written on the bottle and easily identified? Dblock
Most companies make the right oil for the tdi so long as it is 505.01. Just get it from cp4l.
wehey
So any oil from this page will do?It doesn't seem to mention 505.01 on any of the product descriptions http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/engine-oil
Dblock
no oil came up from that link. http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/p/accessories-engine-oil/engine-oils/engine-oil/5w40-engine-oil/?521776081&0&cc5_248that is what you need. Skezza
23 quid. That's a bargain. Triple QX is just rebranded Shell as well. I do pay less for mine because it's an SDI so I don't need specialist PD oil but still, very reasonable.
wehey
Just out of interest. What makes the oil "special" and why can you can you only use this oil in the PD engines?
Skezza
Just out of interest. What makes the oil "special" and why can you can you only use this oil in the PD engines?Don't quote me on this, Dblock probably knows better, I think PD oil is designed to withstand hotter temperatures (the turbo, naturally). Some people use non-PD oil to do an engine flush. There's no reason you can't use PD oil in a non-PD car, however, you CANNOT use non-PD oil in a PD car. If heat is the problem, you could end up with a coking problem in your turbo and then it's new turbo time.
Dblock
I don't know if it is for the turbo per say but I'm sure that is one the aspects of it heat and sheer force. I'm sure it was to do with the cams as they control the injectors but need really good oil to stop them ground down. But don't quote me on that. Also you can use the newer oil if you can get it 506 or 507 in the pd but it's usually more expensive. Also remember the cp4l codes that gets you £5,£10 or £15 off. Gets me more than any of those codes because I rarely buy that much in one go
