  2. Arnold the Arosa Sport! Found on Gumtree one afternoon for a very good price so made the hour and a half journey and brought the little gem! Car was listed on Gumtree with a 'gearbox problem' and in need of TLC which was no problem as price was low enough and I wont be driving it until October 2014.

  4. Hi, We're currently competing in the BTRDA Forest Rally Championship in a 1.4l Lupo and thought we'd share some pictures of the car in action. Social Media links: http://www.facebook.com/carrsturdyrally http://www.twitter.com/carrsturdyrally Nick Carr & Joe Sturdy
  5. And we are back! The Lupo has been happily doing the job of being a great daily for the Mrs. Just a rear wheel bearing replaced last month and regular servicing carried out, the car has been brilliant! Something I have wanted to do for some time now was replace the suspension as the shocks had developed leaks and was leaning way too much in corners. I began researching kits available for the Lupo and kept an eye on various classifieds for a potential deal. As the car would continue to be driven over potholed roads and launched over speedbumps, the requirements meant a compliant ride and a sensible drop. No sump scrapers here. Also with my wife's lack of mechanical sympathy, I needed something that would take adverse situations in its stride. I looked at various coilovers and decided that they were completely unnecessary as the adjustment just wasn't required and I didn't wan't the maintenance hassle either. So various fixed spring/shock combos were investigated. The cream of the crop Eibach Bilstein combo was turning out to be quite pricey and didn't give quite the drop I was after and using cheaper springs with standard shocks sounded like a recipe for a bad quality ride. Various kits from Koni, AP, Spax, Apex and other brands all looked very tempting and all came in around the £300 so while deciding what to buy a brand new Apex Sport kit with a 40mm drop came in on a clearance deal at £215 delivered! Done deal! Apex Sport kit with a 40mm drop The kit looks well made enough for a budget setup. It didn't come with bump stops or top mounts so these were sourced from Euro Car Parts. I went with their option as they offered SKF branded top mount and bearings. So the patient was prepared for surgery. Some reference measurements and pictures were take to see how much the chassis would drop. The old factory suspension had definitely seen better days. A lot of penetrating fluid required. A reference measurement of camber was taken before removal of the shock. An Iphone with the level app or similar will do. This made it easy when fitting the new shock so the camber is close to original while the suspension settles over the next couple of weeks. Final alignment will be done then. The top mounts were dismantled as the top spring cap, dust boot and bearing retaining nut was required. This picture shows the order of assembly. The required parts were transferred to the shocks before fitting to the car. Then the rears were tackled. These were in a similar state to the fronts and had no real damping qualities left. To get to the rear dampers, the interior trim requires removal. The vertical trim pulls away near the top. This reveals x2 torx head screws. Remove these too. The holes can be seen here. Pull the plastic box section towards the front of the car and pull the carpet trim down. This reveals the top mount cover. Pull that off and the top mount will be accessible. Now unbolt everything. The rear bump stops were cut down by the same amount as the suspension drop, 40mm in this case, otherwise the rears would be riding the stops prematurely. I do this because VW tends to use very long rear bump stops for height control so not cutting them down would result in a bumpy ride. Refit is the reverse of removal as they Haynes manual always says! lol. With the rears fitted and the car back on the ground, it's always a good idea to re-tighten all the top mount bolts as the car's weight helps it all seat a bit better. I took the car for a short test drive to help it all settle further and find out what it was all like. I was pleasantly surprised! I expected less roll and a firmer ride anyway as the OE stuff was so badly shot but what surprised me was the way potholes and bad surfaces were dealt with. No crashy bangs or bumps, no hard thumps and I didn't cringe when travelling over speed bumps! Happy as I could be tbh. So how does it look now? Front and rear arch gaps don't swallow children any more. And the overall look is pleasant indeed! I expect it might drop a little further of the next few days too. I'll report back with how it fairs and if the good ride quality is sustained. I hope this helps as I could not find an account for this kit when searching for myself. Gurds
  6. Engine code AUB I've just serviced the engine - new spark plugs, fuel, air, oil and cabin filters, topped off with shell helix 5W40 oil, i've also flushed the fuel system with red line fuel system cleaner and have been running it with premium JET fuel and Shell V-PowerI have removed and cleaned the EGR valveReplaced coil packReplaced HT leadsReplaced throttle bodyThrottle body aligned via VCDSNew batteryNO FAULT CODESProblems: The car doesn't start brilliant - turns over quite a few times before it fires upThere seems to be a flat spot when accelerating around 2k rpm sometimes, where it feels like all engine power just goes then comes back a moment laterLingering when the revs are coming downLag when revving - on my 1.4 non sport you can repeatedly bash the throttle and the revs will correspond. On the sport, if you bash the throttle the revs just mush around with no definition to themThe car is always noticeably smokey out of the exhaust regardless of the weather or how long the car has been runningThe car really struggles past 90mph, especially in 5th gear and if i'm giving it some, however it will happily cruise up to and past that speedIt seems as if when you have the accelerator pedal fully depressed and then ease it back a bit the car picks up a littleI know this engine is renowned for having throttle lag issued but it just seems that this is an abnormal amount of lag If anyone has had any of these problems and has managed to rectify them or just has any suggestions ill have a look into them as i'd like to get this car running 100% or near enough I've put a hell of a lot of effort (and money) into this car getting it roadworthy and running and ill be damned if i can't get it at least 90%
  7. Hi, i recently fitted a lupo sport inlet manifold and throttle body to my 1.4s but ive had problems with the car such as rough idling. The car sounds as if its cammed when at idle. On occasion the car will also cut revs and wont rev at all, i do have engine codes and i have checked them, it says P0106 - MAP/Barometric Pressure Circuit Range/Performance Problem It also says fuel bank trim 1, i have replaced the map sensor but did not fix the problem. The car is fitted with a gti throttle body which has extra vacuum pipes that don't connect up to my engine. I was wondering if it was just a case of there not being enough fuel and that it just needs mapping but am unsure if it is something else. Does anyone have any ideas to what it could be?
  8. Basically my car suddenly stopped working, if you go to fire it it cranks and does a very short burst as though it's about to fire but cuts out, I've had a few mechanics on it but none could find the problem, it's been in vw all week and they've finally put it down to the ecu, if you programme the immo to the ecu it will start but come back to it 5 minutes later and it will have forgotten it and need programming again, What I'm wondering is whether I could get a donor car which I've already sourced at a breakers, take the ecu, immo, transponder chips out of it and put them in mine and it just work with no programming needed and if will I need anything else aswell? Vw want £700-800 for the part and fitting which I can't afford expecially on top of the £300 I owe them for diagnostics Any help is much appreciated!
  9. Where can I get hold of a cupholser for an xreg lupo 1.4 tdi sport? Any suggestions welcome
  10. My spare wheel isn't sitting right in the well and is bulging through the boot liner, is anybody able to get a picture of how it is meant to be because i just cant figure out what is wrong?
  11. found some 15" ats cups that i am willing to purchase but before i commit was wondering if anyone wiser than me know if they fit i know the fact they are 4x100 so they would and i understand the fact that i need to have lower profile tyres in order to keep the overal diameter the same but was looking for advice on offsets and rim width ie would they be outside the arch width. any help would be apreciated thanks harry
  12. Hey guys, bought some replacement spark plugs and I want to change them at home. I know i need a key, but would it be a difficult job to do at home, on 1.4?
  13. Hi guys, been here a while now occasionally popping my head up and saying some stuff! I've been given some HID's, they're a H7 bulb with a kit and run at 2300V! And they're bright. Very bright. I was thinking of running them in my fog lights as the bulb for the main and dipped beam is different yada yada yada! I reckon they'll fit in the fogs! If not then ill have a play around what do u guys think? Matt

(ino gromet on the rear due to halfrauds being crap and being sold out) going into town tomorrow so i can pick one up hopefully! thats it for now, payday tomorrow!!!! got a few things on order from ebay (pressed plates, stubby aerial, black rear mirror, wind deflectors, light tint kit (thanks ashcroft), new front lights and indicators...possibly some other stuff, but not sure yet).. needs new wing mirrors as the previous gammon crashed into a wall and wrote off the originals and decided to fit M3 ones instead... not sure when ill be able to fit it all as i work fulltime and the nights are getting darker everyday... but updates as i go also, the passenger door wont open? ive had the door card off and i cant seem to locate the reason as to why...the elec window still works and there is leverage on the lock cable but the door wont unlock/ open. does anybody know what this problem is/ know how to fix it?

  22. Hey fellow Lupo'ers, Tom here. I feel that its about time that I make my on topic for my Loop. So I've been on these forums since last summer browsing for ideas and general boredom killing. So I past my test last May than 2 days kater jetted of to America to work at a camp for my summer., During this time my old man decided to go out and purchase me my very own Lupo... ( Not quite a surprise, only car I wanted to start of with and told him to keep an eye out while away) Anyway got back late September so only really been driving it for a few months so nothing really major done to it yet, but have so many ideas as long as my budget holds out... Got it completely standard minus a 'boy racer' style gear knob. Its a nice little Lupo Sport 1.4 16v ( had a soft spot for the centre exhaust so wanted this one more than anything ) It cost me £800, And insurance costs £1200, being 21 and first car. Had just over 10k miles so had been driven a bit, had to replace cam belt and door hinge but that's all that's really had to be done.... Although the horn and central locking are not working and drivers side window doesn't work;. This may get photo heavy pretty quick, quite a few saved pictures all ready to go. Hopefully if my picture uploading skills are on point your be able to see what I'm working with... Things I'd Like to do: Lower on CoiloversNew Wheels ( unsure on which ones)GTI exhaustBrand new head unit - Going Double DinNew speakers - preferably component ( unsure on make )New seats - Something better than 'Tom the mouse' seatsWind DeflectorsDe-Badge rearColour front and rear badgesBoot BuildVW Mudflaps Going to get new ones, as want OEM onesRed Stitched GaiterLED Number Plate LightsAuto Glym Vallet bag + productsLupo GTI HT leads) So this is me for now... will keep you posted on little things I have done so far, questions always welcome and be happy to share any ideas Adiós, Tom.... P.s I'm based in Herne Bay Kent, so I obviously be looking at going to some meets, never gone as a driver always a passenger.
  23. Reppin! Finally got a Lupo! And it's a Sport as well. Not taken many pictures of it yet as it's had to have work done to it and I've not been in the mood. Bought it for £2500, done 100k miles but seems to drive perfectly, (coming from my dad) it was loooow, helpers out and everything, but had to raise 35mm it so I could get it over a speed bump at the end of my road Happy as hell with it though! Amazing looking car when it's clean, previous owner was Carly1990, here's a link to what she done to it: http://forums.clublu...90 More pictures this weekend! Dunno what I want to do to it yet, will update when I can, will be a little less frequent at the moment cause I've not got a computer monitor so I'm using a laptop. Sorry for crappy iPhone pics.
  24. Hi everyone, Not much of a poster on here...more of a lurker. So I thought I'd post a readers ride blog of the gfs loop and my Ibiza.
