  1. Hello! I am a new but old member, I just got myself a little run about lupo! I haven't been on this forum since 2008 when I bought my first one! Im going to start this off and keep it updated for the cars journey through my ownership. It's a 2004 1.7SDI. Perfect for daily workhorse life. I got it of a great family who had lost time and money trying to diagnose the faults. To kick things off, I wil upload a picture of the faults. Apparently it could need a new ECU but could be the relay 109 that I have been researching. The faults were cleared and came back each time. Any help appreciated!
  2. Hi everyone, I've been lurking here for a few months so I thought I should introduce myself. Firstly, I'd like to say what a friendly place this is and I think I'd like to stay around for a while if you let me! As a family we've owned at least one VW for the last 34 years now and still have a few aircooled cars on the fleet, so when we started looking for a first car for my son (He turned 17 a few weeks ago) our focus turned to something small, cheap to insure and he could also personalise to some degree. He liked the look of a Lupo, especially the clean lines of the GTi (he is obviously oblivious to the insurance implications) so the search began in October last year. Lockdown has made it a bit tricky to view cars, and I realised that Lupos were not exactly easy to come by and missed two or three, but I was fortunate to see a car advertised here last December in the same town I work and promptly bought it on the spot. You may all remember Helen who briefly turned up last year to sell it. The car is a 2001 SDi 1.7S in Taffeta Green metallic with 171K on the clock. Helen owned it from new and it has been serviced and MOTd at the same local VW dealer from new. Helen loved the car (I believe it has been replaced with a newer Lupo) but she is not a car lover and it is in quite a poor state cosmetically. A (very poor) repair has been attempted to the passenger sill, the driver's side sill it getting scabby near the rear wheel arch as well as in the roof channels. There are numerous parking dings and scuffs around, it also looks like the local youth have climbed over the car a few times with small dents on the roof and bonnet. Both doors made a banging noise opening and closing, the upper door cards and grab handles were broken and there are several bits of trim missing. Despite all this, we have fallen in love with the car, and the engine seems quite reliable and pulls strongly. Having the complete service history is a bonus, many of the usual faults have been addressed over time (pedal box, electric windows). It's never going to be a concourse car, but it looks OK from 20 yards and it will serve us as a learner car and a commuter car (I do about 60 miles a day) We weren't particularly looking for an SDi, but I can see they have quite a loyal following. We have decided to run it on veggie oil and have been doing so for the last month without issue. I must already say thanks to several members here, I have gleaned information to change the fuel filter, the roof aerial, remove and clean the headlining, fix one of the door check straps with an Oilite bearing and I also checked the air intake box (it was perfectly clean inside!) Again, thanks to @mk2, @Skezza and @Rich for posting some very valuable information. Apologies if I missed anyone. Still lots to be done, some beyond our simple capabilities, but the front brakes need attention, one of the door hinges need replacing and I need quite a bit of interior trim. There is also quite a loud whistling above 60mph. I think we will attempt replacing the front disks and pads ourselves, the new door hinge may be a stretch. I didn't bargain on it being so hard to find trim parts, could anyone help me with that here, or should I start a new thread? Cheers Mark
  3. Hi everyone, I've come to the end of my googling solving absolutely none of my questions on this topic but I always seem to land on threads here so figured I'd see what those who have done it or have the know how have to say on the matter. I apologize for the long post in advance! I brought a 1.7 SDI Lupo almost a year ago now from a friend who was the 2nd owner and had always planned to turbo charge the beast. I purchased a few extras from him including: 215 (I think? memory fades quick) injectors which I believe are from a pre-PD 90 or 105. (These have already been installed and damn, what a difference!) TD03 turbo with exhaust manifold and inlet manifold from a mk3 golf TDI (So I have been told, need to double check the part numbers) Manual twisty boi boost controller for vacuum control. Front Mount Intercooler. I have since sat on these parts for the last 8 months and really want to get it done. My biggest question is Oil Feed and Return lines as my Lupo is one of the engines with the 1.9 stamp on the block but I don't know if the return is blanked or has a bolt in it. (I presume it's blanked)... I had a look at the oil pump on these SDIs and I can see that there's a set of 4 blanked off ports on the filter housing, are these enough to just slap a feed on? And for returns, I will likely just have to drill a hole in the sump, weld in an AN fitting and make a custom line? Intercoolers, I have read that I might be able to get away with no intercooler as long as I definitely plan on running a cold air intake (Which I will be given it's going to get toasty behind the block!) Oh and Oil Coolers, a must or forget it? I want something simple but reliable.... The current situation is that I used this engine to learn how to map EDC15 ECUs of which has gone really well. Mapped in the new injectors to avoid smoke and have made a map that is turbo ready to avoid stressing the bottom end with too much boost or making the gearbox **** itself.... Gotta say for an SDI it's surprising how much an injector change can do. (ECU stats according to EDCsuite show 65HP and around 160lb/ft torque. Though it's definitely nippier I wouldn't say it's quite that but maybe one day we'll dyno it properly) Popcorn and Launch Control were added for the scene points too, it sounds stupid but that's the goal. (Interestingly, the SDI Map has all the map tables for MAP/MAF and also the N75 Valve in, so while it's possible to wire them in for full boost control, I won't be doing so and just run a boost gauge with the manual controller. Sending it is what me and my friends do.) Attached is a picture of my lupo, I'll further introduce the beast in another post later.
  4. Have done a search but cant get the answer i need. I want to replace the coolant Temperature Sensor. i need to know where it is... and what is the correct one. A picture would be ideal! like i said i have tried searching but getting nowhere. 2004 1.7 SDI reg: OE04 LLN
  5. Anyone know the recommended battery specification for my lupo SDI? Seen threads on GTI and other petrol models, but I know diesel usually need different spec batteries. My battery is totally dead now, to the point where I can jump it to start but car just turns off after about 10 seconds. Thanks
  6. Lupo SDi 1.7 AKN engine code. Can You Help? My Lupo suffers from excessive vibration, its not the normal vibration, but more, hopefully someone has had a similar experience and solved it? This is the second SDI Lupo I have owned, in comparison, the previous one ran like a 'Swiss watch' until the engine management gave up. The L & R engine mount appear fine, I recently changed the rear gearbox mount (dogbone) while underneath replacing the center & rear silencers. The front small 'knuckle joint was completely shot, but the larger rear rubber mounting was ok, I hope this would solve the problem, not such luck, it is now much worse! At tick over (950rpm) is unbearable, 20mph plus better, but the mind-numbimng vibration comes back around 60-65mph, over 73mph its fine. Tricky to drive anywhere like this! I initially beleived the problem may be clutch related, as the previous owner made a number of 'schoolboy' reassembly errors, not doing mount bolts up properly etc, however there are no other clutch related symptoms whatsoever. Please share any ideas you may have about the cause would be fantastic. Gary7
  7. Proper struggling to find a new one of these. Part Num is 6N0199851AH which is for the SDI I don't mind it being aftermarket brand like Moog or Febi etc Am I gonna end up at TPS..? Thanks
  8. Anyone ever straight piped an SDI? I've heard the backbox can be restrictive on it, would removing it free up some more mpg? My main concern is noise, my downpipe has rusted away and separated, its extremely loud. If I put a straight through from manifold all the way to the rear would it still be extremely loud because it's NA? My 1.9tdi isn't that loud straight piped, but that's probably because it's turbo'd. i know someone will have done it.. cheers
  9. Hi all, So I've been reading things (yeh I know), I'm just in the process of renewing all my brakes and lowering the sdi on coilovers. I've read some things (on here) that if you lower then the rears could lock on braking due to them overcompensating for increased load on the rear..? I've never heard this before but my car doesn't have ABS. Has anyone had to adjust their brake bias to counteract this? If so how? Or is this all a load of BS? I wouldn't normally be bothered but I don't play with brakes! Cheers
  10. VW Lupo 1.7 SDI For Sale It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to get rid of my lupo 1.7 sdi with it having failed it’s mot recently. i’ve been quoted £400 to get it repaired to pass (problems being shock absorbers, and suspension dust covers needing replacing, high labour cost jobs apparently). I just don’t use the car enough to warrant spending the money, and have neither the time or the skills to sort it out, and would rather it went to a good home and someone else got some use out of it. Year: 2002 mileage: 112k miles colour: light blue location: Didcot MOT: recently failed, but old one still valid for a few days (till end of jan 2019). the good: in good condition, zero rust anywhere, starts instantly every time. I’ve had this car for 12 years and have not mistreated it in the slightest. the bad: needs a damn good clean. Paint peeling off rear bumper. shallow dent in passenger door, windscreen wash system has slow leak, electric windows work but are sometimes temperamental. Price £400, but am open to offers
  11. So after a fail on the MOT and deciding to sell the car for parts I have done some serious soul searching and have decided to keep the Lupo and put it back on the road. The list of jobs seems endless but this is it: Brake peddle not retuning to the up position. Have to lift with foot for the last 1cm to turn off the brake lights No reception on the radio this is a aftermarket head-unit (Do i need a signal booster?) New suspension and bushes all round (What is the cheapest way to do this?) Blown exhaust in various locations (What parts do i need for a full system) Cam Belt and Water pump (Total confused, What kit do i need and where is the best/ cheapest place for this?) Brake disks pads and hoses More to follow. Tighten up the gear linkage. (At some point) Gear box flush and oil change (Is there a liquid for this like engine flush? and best fluid to replace it with) Where to start and get this done? I am sure there is a list of parts as long as my arm. I will update this as it goes along. All feel free to chip in with any advice and help.
  12. Hi all, lurked for ages but finally pulled the trigger! Been wanting an SDI for quite a while and the right one popped up less than 3 miles from home last week! Went to view in the dark after work and decided it was good enough for what I needed. Red 04 plate SDI S with around 170k on the clock, full service history with many stamps and cambelt/water pump done last year. Drives really well and is totally standard, couple of issues such as creaking clutch pedal.. I'm assuming pedal box, do VW still cover (or partially cover) this job under warranty? Will probably change all the braking components and fit some coilovers and perhaps change wheels (wouldn't mind some banded steels). Other then that it's going to remain pretty standard as it's the daily mile muncher whilst my S3 sits on the driveway. Couple questions, how can I tell if it has ABS? And does anyone know of any insurance companies that will mirror my no claims discount onto the lupo? I seem to be getting quotes for more than the S3! And that's stage 2+ declared! Will try to get some photos up soon. Thanks
  13. Make: VW Model: Lupo SDI MOT: 28/11/18 (Fail) TAX: £30 p.y Milage: 105,000 I am sad to have to do this but I am going to have to let my Lupo go as it has failed its MOT today I have attached the list of faults. Other than what is listed the car is in not to bad condition. It is clean and drives well. I am not in the position to break it for parts. If I had the time and space I would fix it myself but this is not an option for me. Location: Salisbury Wiltshire Price: £650
  14. Does anyone know the correct Bosch number for an SDi coolant fan? The V Dub no. is 6N0 959 455E a 200/60w 2-speed as far as I can tell. The only Bosch one I've found is 0 130 107 291 which has two pins on the connector making it a single speed motor. My current fan as fitted (a Temic) has 3 pins as has the thermostatic switch on the radiator. Whilst asking, can anyone advise on the easiest way to get the fan out as it appears blocked by the top hose on the SDi?
  15. Selling as a whole for spares/repair - not breaking as not possible. Sad to be parting with this Lupo. Front sub frame has damage to it (palm sized hole and rust) advised too expensive to repair. Make: VW Model: Lupo SDI MOT: December 2018 Engine size: 1.7 Fuel type: Diesel Drives well. One lady owner since 2006. Serviced and looked after. Reliable, it has never failed to start. Yellow, 224,000 miles. Recent clutch and tyres. Cam belt 170,000. Rear axle replaced April 2014. Both door locks have failed. Damage to frame is the reason for sale. Location: Cornwall Price: £300 ono.
  16. VW Lupo 1.7 SDI Yellow Clean 9 Months MOT no advisories 1.7 Diesel 100,000 Miles Good runner. New brakes all round New clutch put in 2000 miles ago. Rough paintwork as bump strips were previously removed and not very well.. Was my wives car, used for popping into town and no longer need it. SOLD ONO
  17. Hi there, I need help with a very loud and distressing wheel speed noise. It's there wether in gear or not, only with the wheels turning. Clutching has no effect on it. It sounds, as far as I can tell (and a couple of different passengers) to be coming from the front passenger side wheel, with some vibration noticeable through the foot well. I've had the front up and listened with a Dowell while the wheels are driving, and the gearbox and drivers side knuckle make a kind of sshsshssh noise which I would associate with dry or very slightly worn bearings. While the passenger side knuckle makes a crunchy clunkey noise. Thing is that I've now changed the p side bearing twice, and the knuckle (I scragged the original) and drive shaft with no definite change. having done the bearing both times found the hub nut not tightened all the way after a few miles, despite Having wound the Bearing in with a puller and torqued up the nut. Car is 2001, 115k and the noise was audible but mild 10k ago and now is incredibly insistent. I need Help as I'm about to drive from Somerset to Wales, towing 700k, and don't want a failure on route. Or a catastrophic gearbox failure. And would love to take it to 200+k I guess I'm asking what it might be, or what I did wrong fitting the bearings to cause them to fail prematurely (10's or hundreds of miles) fag bearings All help greatly appreciated, any questions just ask. I could make a recording but when I have the exhaust shielding rattle and console squeak largely drowns it out. Thanking you kindly, Joshhert
  18. So in the tradition of a newbie, I'm here for help please! This is my 2nd Lupo SDi, the first had done over 250k so I know they should go on forever, which is making this problem even more frustrating! So 1.7 SDi went to start one morning a few weeks ago and it turned over but immediately cut out with a whiny/grindy noise. And has done the same thing every time I've tried to start it since. There is plenty of diesel in it so it isn't fuel starvation. Battery is turning it over. I'm all out of ideas, any suggestions? Could pop it in the garage as a last resort, but I wanted to pick your brains first...any ideas?
  19. My SDi's gearbox has let go in the usual fashion and so I'm searching for a replacement. Does anyone have one for sale? Thank-you.
  20. Hi guys, II require my cambelt changing on my Sdi 1.7 lupo. Is anyone around the Derby area, or I can travel who can change it for me please? The garage wanted £400 and I'm not prepared to pay that price. Thanks
  21. Self explanatory really, does anyone know if an sdi slam panel would fit straight in into a 1L E lupo? Thanks
  22. WANTED TDI OR SDI WITH THE £30 ROAD TAX VERSION AS CLOSE TO YORKSHIRE AS POSSIBLE THANK YOU
  23. 2002 VW Lupo 1.7 SDI black for sale with 147k miles good runner with 5 months MOT left also taxed so ready to drive away. Had a second hand gearbox along with a new clutch on Feb 2016 that had done 71k miles. Cambelt and timing belt changed on Dec 2015 last serviced sept 2015. Fuel filter and air filter changed in summer bought oil filter but haven't had time to change the oil. 4 alloy R15 wheels came with car not to everyone's taste. Good tread on all tires except right front passenger which was a remould (see pic) runs well and is a reliable workhorse. Fixed heater which didn't work when I got the car (only worked on no4 but now all works) passenger window doesn't work possibly dodgy motor or window runners haven't had time to sort it out. Central locking works 90% of the time. Also had some respraying to cover up car park scrapes on passenger wings it's not pretty but covers it up. Open to offers looking for £900.
