My Car Diary

Currently Driving

  1. Driving home from work last night through countryside, and would occasionally hear a kinda "whoo" sound. Thought it was an owl in the countryside, but it happened today on the way there. Anyone have any idea what this could be? It also sounds sorta electronic, especially as it fades out.
  2. VW LUPO RED LEATHER INTERIOR FOR SALE. Front seats, rear seats, front upper and lower door cards, rear door cards, parcel shelf and clock cover. There is a little wear on drivers bolster but this will be repaired before sale. The rest of the interior is in very good condition! Looking for around £600 OVNO Willing to post at buyers expense. Text me on 07935056061 for more info and pics.
  3. Wondering if anyone else has any experience with swapping out the original Lupo steering wheel with a golf one. Is it as simple as taking the current one off, and putting a golf one on? Or are there any hacks that need to be in place for this to be feasible? Any information will be helpful!!
  4. VW Lupo 1.7 SDI Yellow Clean 9 Months MOT no advisories 1.7 Diesel 100,000 Miles Good runner. New brakes all round New clutch put in 2000 miles ago. Rough paintwork as bump strips were previously removed and not very well.. Was my wives car, used for popping into town and no longer need it. SOLD ONO
  5. Last night I went to close my driver side door and it wouldn’t budge at all, the door has always been heavy but recently there has been a crunching noise when it closes (I just assumed because the car is old and the doors are heavy) then when I went to close it last night there was no movement all and I’ve head to leave the die wide open
  6. 54 plate Lupo 1.4 When I slow down and press the clutch in, the engine does the slowing down sound and then does these little brr brr sounds, which sounds like it is revving up, but when I look at the rev counter it dips when it brrs. Is this normal or what could be causing this?
  7. So in the tradition of a newbie, I'm here for help please! This is my 2nd Lupo SDi, the first had done over 250k so I know they should go on forever, which is making this problem even more frustrating! So 1.7 SDi went to start one morning a few weeks ago and it turned over but immediately cut out with a whiny/grindy noise. And has done the same thing every time I've tried to start it since. There is plenty of diesel in it so it isn't fuel starvation. Battery is turning it over. I'm all out of ideas, any suggestions? Could pop it in the garage as a last resort, but I wanted to pick your brains first...any ideas?
  8. Anyone got any ideas why my Lupo GTi doesn't always start when the engine is warm? I've taken this to a couple of garages now, but non of them have even been able to replicate the fault, let alone fix it! An example I give them is I leave my house, and go to the petrol station (10 minute drive) ignition off, key out, leave it a couple of minutes while I fill up, go to start it again then it wont start (see attached video and try to ignore the beeping). After leaving the ignition off for 5-10 minutes then try and start the car, it'll work. The check engine light is on, the fault is apparently the engine temp sensor. However this has been replaced with an OEM part and all wiring has been check with nothing unusual to show. Any suggestions would be appreciated! 20180206_171553.mp4
  9. Genuine novice question. I may be asked to sell my father-in-laws '55plate 1.4s Lup with, hold on....16,900mls from new, as you can imagine it's pretty much like new full VW dealer history, etc, etc....has a slight mark on a bumper corner...have no idea what this possibly rare beast may be work your advice please, many thanks
  10. Looking at getting a scorpion exhaust. Has anyone got one & how would you rate it? not sure wether or not to get just the back box and run it straight through to the cat or get the scorpion exhaust with the middle silencer included.. need opinions!
  11. Hello all, I'm seeking some valuation/price advice, as I MAY be tasked with selling my father-in laws Lupo and yes, the mileage is correct...see below for the details, Can anyone sensibly advise me, I'll reply collectively once I;ve received some feed back, thank you in advance. Lupo 1.4S, A/C, '55 plate.......16,900mls, yes 16,900mls....Dealer serviced all it's life, 2 owners father and son, one 25mm x 4mm scuff on a bumber corner and a 20mm craze in paint of rear bumper top, other than that, unmarked inside and out. What could it be worth?
  12. Hi guys, I just turned 17 and got myself a Lupo 1.4 16V, have been driving it on a provisional until I pass my test, already done some work to it since it had been left for a couple of years in a garage. However I've noticed that my gas pedal sits at about half the height of my brake/clutch pedals, if I put my foot under it and lift the pedal it will freely lift to the same height as the others, but as soon as I let go it drops back down to halfway. I was thinking it is the throttle cable? Been told that the throttle is electric though so I'm not too sure how to go about it, any suggestions? Cheers, Chris
  13. Hello, Looking for a lupo 1.4tdi as a commuter. Only seen 1 on auto trader but it's in Scotland, so a little too far; (393 miles), to not know if it's any good. Live near Banbury but happy to travel 100+ miles for the right car. If the car has been maintained with FSH, i would be happy to buy one with around 150k miles on. Preferably no rust but I know these cars are getting on a bit. Thanks for looking.
  14. Hi there! Just got my first Lupo (1.4, 16v, black, open air) a couple of months back, and I love it to pieces. Aside from wanting to find other lupo owners that love their cars as much as I do, I'm also looking for some advice. The open air roof leaks something chronic, and even though I've pulled the whole thing out and stuck sealant under the roof panel, it's still letting water in Can anybody either - 1.) Give me advice on how you've DIY fixed this yourself? 2.) Direct me to someone currently breaking an open air/selling a secondhand roof OR 3.) have an idea of any businesses that might be able to redo the roof? Preferably at a non extortionate price, being a student doesn't allow much in terms of funds Hope this is all allowed! Thanks in advance for any help <3

  16. Hi im currently running 8J ET25 (16”) on the rear of my lupo gti on a 205/40/16 with no problems (yet) So I’m wondering if I was to go for a 9J ET20 (16”) 215/35/16 which would be 7.7mm closer to the suspension and stick out 17.7mm more than my current wheels would It touch the suspension I know it’s only 7.7mm closer but I have it pretty tight as it is so I’m worried it will rub ? any help would be much appreciated (Both setups are almost exactly the same height) (I don’t have camber shims) Link to the wheels https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3SDM-0-05-4x100-16-X-8J-ET25-WHITE-SET-OF-4-WHEELS-POLO-LUPO-ASTRA-CORSA/172127515795?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D81df90ffbc604af3890ba4bf421189c3%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D172127515795%26itm%3D172127515795&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A7583e87e-030c-11e8-9585-74dbd1809629%7Cparentrq%3A358388461610a688acfc609bffe2e415%7Ciid%3A1 thanks ?
  17. In a recent cold spell the missus went out to the car to drive to work and on starting the car the wipers failed to operate. She tried the stalk for the rear wiper and the screenwash but the stalk was completely dead. Immediately I jumped to fuse but it's unlikely that all three signals are on the same fuse (wash, front wipe and rear). I presume it's likely to be stalk failure but I can't imagine the switch being over CAN and failing the same as the Mk4 golf stalks have a tendency to. I'll check the fuses and relays tonight and then look at replacing the stalk at worse case. Anyone had similar before? Cheers.
  18. Looking at getting a scorpion back box for my Lupo sport. I've heard they can be a bit quiet so i was thinking if i took out the middle silencer and put a straight through pipe to the back box would it be noticeably louder?
  19. Hey guys, my first day on forum and post, so bare with me if im breaking some laws lol. I have a VW Lupo 1.4 2001 plate. I want to do a MAJOR service on it but want to be sure i buy all the proper and correct parts and tools, so if someone could answer my following questions would really appreciate it. 1) Spark plug change - What size spark plug socket is needed to remove the spark plugs / Does it need to be a deep socket or will regular size work? 2) Engine oil - What grade do i need / How many litres? / Bit of a toughh one but does anyone also know what VW specification number (usually on back of oil bottle) i should be using 3) Oil filter - appears to come with a hex adaptor attached to it (when looking at pictures) to help sockets remove it. does anyone know what size socket it is? 3) Oil sump nut - Does anyone know what size socket is needed for the bolt on the sump. If there are any tips or tricks people may want to warn me about when doing these jobs please feel free to help me making mistakes Sorry for all the questions but if anyone could help it would be great. thanks

  22. Hi looking for a working engine for my Lupo Gti, preferably an engine that is running and from a 6 speed Lupo. anyone?? 07958682511
  23. This is my Volkswagen Lupo, it's a 3D 1L, 2003 painted yellow. This is what it looked like when I first bought it. However it did not stay the this way. My dad works in a garage on the island and so of course did some work on it for me. He painted the bumpers, fitted brand new gear cables, put four coats of polish on and a new grille, took out the dents and a few other bits and pieces. This is the finished piece, needless to say I love it, especially for a first car. Of course, being the lunatic that I am. I decided to go off-roading with a couple of my buddies. And I'm sure you're all aware that these cars are not mean't for driving off-road. I didn't cause too much damage, just smashed the rear brake light, and scraped some of the fresh new paint work. I am going to be repairing it after Christmas, in the meantime I'm getting a few appearance upgrades such as a new seat trims, possibly a black VW badge, and adding some more decals.
