  1. Update:

We struggled on emissions again to get an MOT, but scraped through. Advisory on rear brakes so I have done a bit of fettling.

Rear cylinder was weeping on one side so I ordered a brake shoe set and fixing kit. When I took the rear hubs off, the bearings came apart so I had to replace the rear hubs too. The cylinder arrived but had only one fixing hole in it which was the wrong side so couldn't be bolted in. A replacement had a hole for both sides so went straight in.

I had ordered a full exhaust and cat after last year but hadn't fitted it, and the front wheel bearings needed doing, but I farmed out the work as the exhaust was pretty rusty and my press was out of action. They were renewed when we recommissioned the car but the quality of bearings can be very poor so FAG ones were fitted as advised by our friendly VW friendly specialist.

Got the car back and was advised to get the alignment set up as it was out of line. The mystery of the emissions was also solved as the "Cat" had no internals. Nothing. Just a shell of one!

Got the alignment done (£50) and the car now drives perfectly. If you ever change the struts or hubs get it checked as it has made a huge difference.

Hopefully the MOT next year will have no emissions related malarkey.

  2. Copied from my thread as relevant:

Well, progress on the emissions front since putting in and testing the new temperature sensor. Put the car on the exhaust analyser and getting high CO. but Lambda and HC within limits. 150 on HC but still high on CO. Will fit new cat next week and re-test next week.

Change temp sensor and check it before digging deeper...

  3. Fitted a new temp sensor - well eventually! New one had too small an "O" ring so leaked. I swapped the rings over and fitted it. Now the temperature gauge will not go above the bottom of the 70 C bar. Took it for a good run and let it idle. Fan cut in as it should, but temp gauge didn't go above 70. It did move off the stop, but just. Picking another new sensor today.

    Air filter is clean.

  4. No more engine cut outs since my last post.

Just MOTd but had issues with emissions. I've posted on the "New Member" thread.

"Running rich. The temp gauge reads OK. Is it possible that the sensor is still faulty and is telling the car  it is "Cold" and over fuelling when it is actually warm? Sounds smooth when running with no EML. Not smokey either.

Any top tips for poor emissions? "

  5. Had some difficulty getting it through this years MOT due to emissions. Running rich. The temp gauge reads OK. Is it possible that the sensor is still faulty and is telling the car  it is "Cold" and over fuelling when it is actually warm? Sounds smooth when running with no EML. Not smokey either.

  6. As title really. On our 1.4S, NS window has stopped moving from the switches. Both switches (one on the door and the other on the drivers door) when operated, cause a click in the door but the window doesn't move. Any tips on likely causes?

May be completely unrelated, but a few weeks ago the door locked button stopped coming out of the door card when opening. Window was working even after that so probably nothing to do with it...

  7. Our 1.416v Lupo has cut out a couple of times now in the last two weeks.

Driving along, it's as if someone has switched the ignition off. Car engine cuts out slows to a halt. Switch off and it restarts. Then drives as if nothing is wrong.

Any likely common fault that would behave like this? I'm thinking Crank Position Sensor? I have an OBD reader, but it won't link to the Lupo. Any tips?
