I did yes when I first tried it with the engine off they all went in easily, however now irrespective of the engine being on or off I still can’t select reverse gear without forcing it in.

Hi guys
Would anyone one be able to advise please. I’m having trouble with my 1.4tdi lupo gears.
Went ro drive the car this morning and the gears were really stiff. Managed to changes gears and drive but It wouldn’t engage reverse when the car was running.
People suggested that once warm the car should be fine and to clean the linkage.
Ive just cleaned the gear linkage with wd40 and lubricated it with silicon grease. The gear change is now much better but I still can’t engage reverse without crunching.
Your suggestions on what to try next would be appreciated.

3rd gear synchro seems like a common problem (cant get 3rd gear at all on a cold day for a few minutes until the gearbox warms up on mine). no crunching just cant select it.
Pedal box is different as hydraulic clutch, gearbox is pretty bombproof compared to the weak 085 on 1.0 and 1.4 petrol models. £30 tax is fantastic as is the easy cheap diy remap options for an easy 100+ HP.
3 pot have a chain driven balance shaft that also drives oil pump, the AMF seems quite robust here with many lasting beyond the life of the car 200k+ but listen for obvious noises from that area.
I love my tatty TDI, they are fantastic little cars.
Thanks sausage. That’s the info I needed

I’m thinking the same hence my question above

I’ve been looking to buy a 1.0 and know most of the common faults. However with a 1.4tdi are there any different faults I need to be aware.
I was also told that the 1.4tdi doesnt suffer the same peddlebox issue, is that correct ?
Thanks in advance

The Lupo was designed by a small split team from the Polo group to turn a miniature concept car into production (allegedly). The Fox is a small economy car, originally designed for the S American market, with lots of Brazilian tax incentives to get people working.
so my take on it, is, yes, they're both vdubs, but one was (apparently) built for the love of proving a concept is possible by an enthusiastic team, whereas the other was built to keep people off the streets. What would you pick? The difference in build quality is obvious, but the tech on Lupo is a lot older. The fox is a newer generation vdub just like @Rich suggests. Lupo is more like a Mk2 golf.
Now this would make a lot of sense why there is so much live for the lupo

They're butt ugly and have six cup holders.
Built in Brazil.
Ugly and awful, they're just a 9n3 under the surface.
Interesting I Hadn’t realised they shared the polo internals.

Not heard anything negative, to me they are not the most attractive of VW - look bloated + with the skinny wheels they seem out of proportion... but for a first car they always have a small engine and there is not hot model, I assume unpopular with the yoof of today - probably better for insurance
Your right regarding the youth of today,
my son really isn’t keen on the car

Hi guys just wondering if you can shed some light on why Vw fox was never as popular as the lupo.
Need to get my son a first car. I’m really looking at the lupo but then came across the fox. They just don’t seem to be as popular so was wondering why. Is it poor build quality and issues or just a desirable factor ?

Was this car at the car show in Telford ? In the car park?

Thank you all for your time and advise guys. It really has been appreciated.
I checked for slop in the mechanism and gave it all another good clean. I then followed the video below on how to reset the gear linkage and it seems to have worked.
I’ve attached the video in case any one else has similar problems in the future.
