And it's an import... You have to declare that. Same as as Cat C or whatever.

I know there's been debate about that previously, and there can be differing views, but I've never seen any downside about the 'import' tag - on the contrary, my own, from Japan, benefits from having an underside that never saw salt until 2018.  I've never had any indication that my insurance premiums have been loaded, and the original spec was just as I would have wanted on a European market car, including air conditioning. And you even get the funny little red emergency flare 'missile' under the dash on the left hand side - what more could any Lupo maniac wish for!

  2. Thanks for the response - much appreciated.  I had already checked just about everywhere and did find one which I'm picking up today. Shortage seems routine with this tyre and I've never been able to get replacements straightway, off the shelf. I know plenty of owners advocate an alternative size/model, but I just like the look of the car on the Proxes - the rear view/stance on 205 together with the centre exhaust tips is to me one of the very best aesthetic things about the Gti. Annoyingly, the one remaining tyre for which I don't yet have a replacement has lots of tread left, but is suffering with the familiar age-related superficial sidewall cracking. Hoping to find one as I'm having my Bathursts powder-coated next month. regards, David

  3. I wanted an Up! Gti in 2018, but couldn't even get a demo at that time down here in the South East.  This was after owning a Move and then a High.  Luckily, I realised that the Lupo Gti is actually a better car in most respects, and found my current car.  It happened that some years previously, I had bought my daughter her first car - a (red) diesel Lupo.  She has retained a very fond memory of that car and has recently 'recreated' the experience by replacing her Touran with a . . . red Up!  BTW, it's now 55 years since I bought my first car - '55 oval Beetle.  Still not sure how I managed to scrape up the £75 I had to pay for that beauty!Img_0977.thumb.jpg.39f3a4df2499e553f48fdbfa6fcdf104.jpg

  4. My Gti is 2005 MY, ex-Japan.  The offside rear caliper handbrake lever is apparently not returning, leading to continual wear to the outer brake pad. My local garage has been told a new caliper is not available. They are working on part number, 6N0615424A.  I have looked at suppliers on-line, but am a bit confused - if anyone here can help with these points, I'd be very grateful:

    • I believe handedness is indicated by the last two digits - 24 = right, 23 = left?
    • My garage has said they've also be quoted 6N0615424B - I'm unable to see what the final character - A or B - indicates
    • As the OE spec was a red painted caliper, is there a part number which is specific for a red-finished item?
    • I have used Autodoc.co.uk recently for a part (window regulator), but wonder if anyone here has a recommendation for a really good aftermarket supplier to the UK?

    Many thanks.

    Regards.

    David

  5. I have still got this spoiler, having had previous offers fall through. I was intending to keep it, but now could do with some budget help for a new bodywork project, so I'm re-offering.  To see the condition of the spoiler please see here

I had previously listed this spoiler - here

A buyer indicated that they accepted the quality of the surfaces (which need quite a lot of work) but on receipt claimed the ends were 'severely' damaged in transit, (they hadn't been). I'd not be keen on posting it out and then taking it back, i.e. should anyone want to buy, it'd be on a no-returns basis. Note - the spoiler is without the CHMSL.

Having wasted time and money on the previous transaction, I'm prepared to consider any reasonable offer if someone is ready to spend the time on it,  (and have a factory spoiler at a big saving.)

    Thankyou.

It is the TT version I have, they are the same👍🏼 I got mine originally from a UK company but they don’t sell them anymore. A friend recently got one from the USA and it is the correct one.

Thanks Clayton. Surprising that no one is offering here, but it looks worthwhile, so I'll be getting from the U.S. Regards. David 😊😊😊

  7. Mine is January 2006-registered, ex-Japan and now 74,000.  I'm interested in comments here regarding price/vale. I think perhaps some people might take the standard Gti's performance capabilities for granted.  As someone who got my first licence in '68, I naturally have an interest in and affinity with 70s cars - I started working for BMW in '71. One of my all time favourite cars is the 2002 Tii. We used to think that a very fast car in the day - but just look at the figures: Lupo Gti: 123 bhp; 0-60: 8 secs; top speed: 127 mph; 2002 Tii: 130 bhp; 0-60: 9.8 secs; top speed: 118 mph.  And what about these other examples: Lotus Europa (Renault engine): 82 bhp; 0-60: 9.1 secs; top speed: 116 mph; Alfa GTV 2000 (105 series): 129 bhp; 0-60: 8.2 secs; top speed: 121 mph. So I think the value we get for £4K-£7K in a car with such a sensibly small footprint is outstanding. So there!

  8. Well done Clayton with the new Piston Heads video - very enjoyable, and showing your Gti off so well.

I'd like to get the OSIR throttle pedal extension for mine, but can't seem to find a UK source, (and I'm also not sure if the TT/Golf version shown as available in the US is a straight fit for a Lupo). Could you please let me know where yours came from.  Many thanks.

    With kind regards.

it isn't an MOT failure anyway, it was an advisory on my first GTI before I fixed it, and on my second GTI before I fixed that they never even mentioned it

Last year I was told that if 50% of the component LEDs were inoperative, it's a fail. Rechecking now, I'm wondering if that was a misunderstanding of the regs, which referred to more than 50% of the brake 'lights' not working - if you read 'lights' as the lamp units - 2 conventional, 1 high level, a dodgy high level would result in still 66% of the lamp units working, so OK (?).  Anyway, I now see further clarification to testers stating that if the unit is not permanently connected (wire taped up) it doesn't have to function for MOT purposes. I'm happy now that this isn't the possible future problem I'd been trying to get ahead of. Thanks for the replies and opinions.

Hi Dave hope you’re ok.Unless you want to pay£1000 on eBay I think there all gone.Seen a video on YouTube if you can get it out in one piece it’s repeatable, finish off with clear silicone between boot and spoiler so no more water gets in.

Morning Andrew - hope you're good too.  I think you're right - I've tried following up a few on eBay after searches, but there doesn't seem to be any actually available.  I'm just trying to get ahead of possible future MOT failure;  the things are a bloody nuisance, as is the spoiler - one of the most irritating aspects of Lupo Gti ownership - though most other things continue to make having one a real delight, especially as cars generally continue to get ever bigger and heavier. Regards. D
