  1. Decided to order one of these, just need to wire the power and Earth to replace the original ballast. Once arrived and fitted I'll report back for anyone else who gets into a similar situation http://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/400517775232
  2. Thanks guys, appreciate the input If anyone has done it, if they could post up the wires that need connecting too at the multiplug or a wiring diagram that'd be great I'll get a kit ordered as need the headlights sorting
  3. Also thought if I just replace the whole system to a CAN-BUS error D2S HID kit it replaces the igniter as well in case there's a fault with that too? Fitted HID kits in previous cars, just need to find the headlight signal wire in the multiplug (unless anyone has a wiring diagram on here) so as to switch it on
  4. I did see that but doesn't come with any ballast/control unit appreciate the heads up though. I've seen the slim line replacement 35W ballasts for D2S xenon systems which are about £45 but need loom modification. Just in the process of searching for a replacement ballast anywhere else. Google lists it as a 6 pin Valeo unit?
  5. Hi guys, this may sound like a stupid question and may have been covered elsewhere but couldn't find a thread. Basically my passenger xenon started flickering the other day so ordered a new bulb which I fitted tonight but upon removal of the headlight I found the ballast to be damaged on the bottom of the light unit and duck tapped into place (nice repair lol). Fitted the new bulb just on the off chance of it still being that but it's obviously still flickering and then not coming on. So obviously looking like the ballast needs replacing which is going to be £140 cheapest so far, but my question is, surely I can just wire in an after market D2S HID kit? I know this doesn't make it OEM but just looking at the cost difference. Anyone else done this?
  6. Mines a 2002, and its a 6 speed gearbox. There were no ratings on the old starter motor when I removed it to compare it to be honest. It's still got a warranty on it and I'm tempted to see about exchanging it in case it's a faulty starter on the solenoid side. At the same time I can check what the ratings are of the starter. The problem is very intermittent, today it's been absolutely fine. Did it every day from cold before I replaced the battery last week and it's only done it a couple of times since. Going to monitor for a while. I need to reseal the rocker cover as well as noticed no.3 spark plug covered in oil when I serviced it a while ago as suspect it's leaking from the cover, noticed it smokes a little on startup from cold which I'm hoping is that. Will obviously change the cambelt, water pump and aux belt whilst I'm at it
  7. Had an issue with my Lupo GTI starting recently. The engine has covered 130k miles. When I bought it 8-9 months ago the starter was sticking (I know common issue) so I replaced it and also fitted a new battery at the same time. During the summer, on the odd occasion when the engine got hot, and it had been switched off, when restarted it wouldn't start, as though battery flat/starter sticking. I pulled all the earths and wiring going to the starter and fuse box in the engine bay and cleaned them and greased and the problem appeared to disappear. Recently as the weather has got colder the problem reappeared but doing it from cold, but if the key is held it the starter will pick speed up and then the engine fires. On Saturday it finally wouldn't start unless jumped so exchanged my battery as appeared to be faulty with a bad cell. Engine fires straight up now with a new battery, however I've noticed it still has a slight lazy start when you first go to start it? I've checked the alternator and it's charging at 14v idling and then 13.6v with the lights on so that's working. I know ignition switches are supposed to be common problem but it almost seems like a lazy starter from cold. I was going to check the wiring again but thought I'd post up in case anyone has had similar issues with theirs?
  8. I've fitted the Bosch aero's on mine for £20 and no issues at all, clear the screen well
  9. Cheers mate, will have a look there and see about cleaning it all up
  10. Checked it, and cleaned it up to the starter, although need to trace it back to the body to see if it needs cleaning
  11. Hi, recently bought myself a little lupo gti as a daily whilst I'm restoring my beetle and have to say I love it, missed being in a little hot hatch again . Recently it's been playing up a bit. When I first bought it the starter motor was sticking and would stay engaged for a second when started which was annoying so I bought a new starter motor and got it sorted. Then recently found intermittently the engine turns over slowly or won't start, just the starter solenoid clicks, but if turn the key back and try again it'll slowly fire into life, so I bought a new battery and fitted it and seemed to be ok but now it's still doing it. Checked the connections to the starter, i.e earth, live and signal and all look ok. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue or if there's common problems I should be aware of before I delve deeper? Cheers
