  1. Tempting, but I'm in the middle of extended negotiations about a lovely, completely original, not even slightly rusty Golf Country. In red. He's German, I'm not. We'll get there in the end. 7 months so far, and I don't think he's messing with me. I hope. Price isn't the issue. The car is in Spain. ULEZ- I don't believe it has anything to do with emissions, as many people are now running classic cars, which are much smellier (one of my car options). TFL is flat broke, the bank interest payments alone on their bailout loans are actually more than their monthly takings. If it were you or I, we'd declare bankruptcy. But being a gov agency, they can't, and not being part of main government, they have to be accountable. LOL. They're completely screwed. Should be dissolved or devolved or whatever the word is. OMG. Talking politics on CL. What has happened to me? Found this...! Have just ordered a brand new pair from the original manufacturer in Turkey for £15 delivered... wish me luck.
  2. I was incorrect... incidentally passed by breakers today. I have mastered removing vdub door panels in about 45 seconds though! Went through most years and most models. Later cars (2005 on) are different again. Yeah, not happy about ULEZ. Not one bit. I have other cars so I'm fine. But the fact that the charge targets the people who have the oldest, cheapest runabouts, usually with the lowest incomes (the reason why they drive older cars). Personally I think it's cruel and morally wrong. And retired people doing their shopping in their pristine ancient car, only maybe 10 miles a week. Just SMH. It bugs me. So, I used to pick up/drop off at Heathrow with my Lupos. £5 in diesel. They've introduced a £10 drop off charge. And being inside ULEZ, that's now a total of £22.50 just for a five minute round trip drive off the M25 to T5. Nuts. Not doing that anymore. I don't like my personal freedoms being taken away. Rant over.😡
  3. SDI? (now banned in London, even though at MOT has apparently cleaner emissions than a new merc!)
  4. I reckon you could sell those left and right sill corners... Professional job! Very good work. It's got me thinking, that maybe I should unbolt all my wings to see how bad it is under there. Might just need a thick coating of wax if ok? I don't like using the mastic stuff as once rust manages to get under it, it actually makes it rot faster. Can't dry out. Technically, it shouldn't rust along the sills or behind the wings, because the whole car was factory dipped in zinc phostphate wash before spraying. Sticks so well, you need to scrape it off. But i think there was an oversight because the wings flex slightly. And if sand or grit particles get trapped between the wing and sills, they rub through the phosphate, which is how the rust starts IMO.
  5. Good job! I guess you'll be welding through the perforations, then grinding off. The tricky bit is stopping moisture getting between the new and original. I can only think of products like waxoyl to do that, but from the inside. Maybe you might want to drill some holes to allow the stuff to penetrate from the inside, and wick all the way down the new strips once complete. I just pumped a whole load of waxoyl in one of my Lupos. Rear top suspension mounting, rear beam hinge point and sills from one end to the other. Bungs out and spray. There was a trace of wax in there from the factory, but doesn't hurt to add more for extra long life.

    Like a bicycle brake cable...
  7. Just noticed... you're on the moon now. Cool. I thought you dumped that mk4 and use the ropey TT?
  8. 5 degrees both sides?! OMG... yeah must have really been squealing! LOL. I need to take some pics of my freshly blasted f & r frames. Then, the swapsies start. Remove then get another blasted and so on, until I get to the worst one which goes to the metal recyclers along with an old cat I just swapped out. It's going to take a while.
  9. This thing for the drivers side: Same as Golf, Bora, Passat, Phaeton and Polo...
  10. Holy thread revival! Interesting economy numbers. The TDI and SDI are more economical at 120kmh. One of my SDIs can do 3.2L over a 100km equivalent. But motorway driving at 55-60mph is boring...
  11. I don't think the seal on inj 3 would cause it shut off, unless it failed catastophically, where ALL the fuel goes into the oil. It'd misfire a bit and gradually get worse... If the whole engine simply suddenly stops providing any power, that's usually an electrical problem, like crank sensor, fuel pump, power relay, that sort of thing. Or even a loose connection. Maybe the return power bus on the injector solenoid loom was loose, which is ok now, because the injector loom has been replaced? It's a wierd problem...
  12. The gti didn't come with manual windows as far as I know. Chances are that the cards you have are regular ones. The seats in a gti are trimmed different though...
  13. Oh, do tell. About to do three here... one just back from the sand blasters.
  14. Need lots more info. Gear shifting could be clutch pedal (look at "pedal box thread"). Or maybe just the linkage needs a small adjustment. Depends where you are in the UK, prices are behaving wierdly. In the SE, 75 miles near london, the ULEZ thing is making many people dump their non-compliant car, making prices plumet, bargains to be had. Compliant cars however are fetching silly prices, as much as 3k above normal. Looks like an 'E' spec?

The answer is visible further up this thread👍🏻
  16. The main stage is all ready here. I think they're doing the lighting, "suites" and camp site setups right now.
  17. That's 85 mpg (400 miles). I'm amazed. Best numbers I've ever achieved. And I'm now waiting for all the speeding and low emissions zones tickets in the post. I reckon it's my new tyres; running Nokian weatherproof, which have really low rolling resistance, and are exceptionally quiet. Also non standard brake pads, which run higher clearance (they rattle a bit).
  18. Bargain. Bit of front subframe welding or swap, a pair of £4 bushes, clean up brake pipes, some tyres and a light bulb. Good to go. if it were local, it'd be mine already. Interior looks great.

Always replace in pairs for consistent handling, as they wear out. You don't want one side softer than the other. part no. is 6N0413031K, but what looked familiar is... swap the 6N for a different platform, and you end up with the original part, which is from a mk2 Golf. Wow. The exact same. Now I wonder if there is a 1J0... (mk4 golf). The 'bit' of the part number that really matters is the end letter. Like the 'K' might be a completely different fitment to the 'J'.
  20. I think there's a mk2 golf gearbox with the same internals, for the old 1.2 or maybe 1.05 engines. And there are loads of LSDs for mk2s... Bear in mind that the 085 is based on the old VW Derby box (can't remember the code). The weakness though, will be in LHS CV joints. Just look at the angle the shaft runs.
  21. There's a metal plate on the side, next to the differential right where 34&35 are shown. I don't get why they don't show the cover plate, unless the image is a different transmission? To fill the trans fluid, you do it through the bottom hole, and fill up to the top of the little fill tube (21) and then allow it to run out when over filled. There's a procedure you have to follow... You may be able to read it somewehre. Same for most older vdub transmissions. I do it differently, and use the heat exchanger transfer pipe, and have the engine pump out the old fluid until it stops. Then fill, then do it again, stopping the engine the second the fluid goes clear again.
  22. Dirt? Maybe the catch (lock hasp) needs a good clean and lube...
