Currently waiting on replacement Sachs clutch kit to be sent from I assume France - it is £1 more expensive than the ECP LUK rubbish - all covered in my seemingly never ending clutch thread!

Those 2 gearbox bolts at the bottom of the sump have been a complete PITA for me. I don't know if its the KAM exhaust manifold taking up a lot more space than standard, but I have to drop the manifold to take them out. As I have been playing hokey-cokey with the gearbox & sump those 2 bolts have pee-peed me off for the last time.

The weird thing is the tread in the gearbox is full depth and open on the other side - its crying out for stud conversion, took a bit of measuring and at the cost less than £2:

    ZeDKzc.jpg

Like the bolts, I can now undo the nuts with a spanner and if the manifold is too tight the stud can be wound in from gearbox side - using 5mm allen key head - to get the nut off  - no more dropping the manifold.

Original bolts are 8.8 tensile, couldn't find 8.8 grub screws and nuts, these are 14.9 and going to stud conversion I have greater clamping force.

    Good afternoon :)

Please can I be a pain in the proverbial (again ) and ask what the end to end length of the grub screws/studs you used is, and are they M10 x 1.50 pitch?

    Any information greatly appreciated

  2. ‘evening:D

I don’t have a clean expansion tank or know how much they are from VW:blush:, but I believe these are the part numbers as mine is a bit minging brown (I’ll let it off though, it’s done just under 157000 miles), so will be either cleaning or replacing mine at some point if I get around to it....

    Expansion tank: 6N0 121 407 C

    Cap: 1H0 121 321 D

Any idea what the difference is between a normal Lupo ‘tank compared to a GTi one, the ‘tank number is different for some reason?

They do look fantastic but the noise is another league:cheeky: Envious of you being able to source a Janspeed rear box though!

The Janspeed rear ‘box isn’t that much louder than the original VW cat back it replaced- in all fairness though, the original centre ‘box did have a hole in it which was only apparent when it was cut off, it was right on top where the MOT testers couldn’t really see it.... ;)

I have got some recent video footage of it at idle after warm up which I will try and upload here, it might take me a while though so don’t hold your breath.... :D

Managed to upload it quicker than I thought....

The Janspeed was a bit of an accident, I started asking the seller about postage and ended up buying it....

Ninth owner! Wowwwwww, so a few of the previous owners were wanting performance by the sound of things. How many miles has your car done? Excited to get mine on VCDS to find out what's going on though so unless you beat me to it I'll keep you posted!😁

Erm.... guilty I’m afraid- I am responsible for the coil overs (the original suspension was a bit of an unknown quantity and it sat a bit high for my liking) and the aftermarket exhaust, a new genuine VW cat back was way too expensive and I think the Janspeed rear ‘box looks nicer.... B)

Mileage is just over 154000 and a bit :)

    3L wishbones?

Do they fit with the standard crossmember or do you need the 3L one as well?

Interesting read! After reading it you'd be under the impression it is normal to overfuel but I don't at all believe Volkswagen would sell a car which fouls/blacks spark plugs after only 2 miles of driving😂 On cold it idles around 1000-1200 on first startup doesn't it and then drops to about 800-1000.

Do you know much on the history of your car Martin? Mature or young owners? Well looked after and unmodified? As you can probably tell looking through this thread my GTi has been abused daily and cheaply modified so I still have the idea that a dodgy remap could be causing this but we won't know until VCDS comes in!

In regards to the EPC light however, I believe it did come up with brake light switch fault when scanned using an expensive Snap On code reader but my eBay special reader didn't come up with any codes.

Where do I start with mine?

Very briefly- Mine was an ex dealer demonstrator which explained why it was spec’d. with air con., single CD player and Cambridge rear lights, managed to find out purely by chance who PDI’d. it and the salesman whose demo. it was originally, turned out that he had five of them over the space of a few years (and still worked for VW when I spoke to him).

I think mine had perhaps suffered slightly less than yours by the sounds of it, but only just- from what I worked out from the service history and what VW had on file, the owner after the dealer got their money’s worth out of the warranty.... :)

There is a picture or two of it on here somewhere, it’s black and dirty with a very faded and stone chipped bonnet/bumper and all the other wear and tear that comes with a high mileage car, basically standard apart from AP coil overs on their highest setting and a Janspeed rear box with a Longlife centre section, a new VW cat back was too expensive but the original that was fitted had lasted fifteen years.... :D

I think I am owner number nine....

    :)

    Hi Martin!

Yes that's correct, always stinking of Petrol whatever the weather after it's not been driven for a few hours. You experiencing similar issues? I still need to get VCDS on the car to find out what's going on😆

    Good afternoon Adrian :)

Yes I have the same issue, mine has done so since purchase at 128000 ish miles (just about to click 154000), I assumed it was normal and down to what the GTi engine was based on, there is a topic or something like that on the forum somewhere that mentions the engine was based on a race version (I think) and that to make it pass the emissions for road legal use, the idle had to modified- but it has been such a long time since I read it I have probably got the details wrong.... :lol:

Incidentally, when you had the LED bulbs fitted and your EPC light came on, did you get a brake light switch fault log?

ARB is on, like everyone's said it makes a big difference, so I'm very happy with it! Have since put on a BMC CDA with metal piping and I have a stainless manifold to go on, I'll probably get this fitted at Tony Banks with a sports cat. Gonna keep hold of the standard mani incase I ever want to revert back!

Got some car park pictures today, multi-storeys have the best lighting!

Please excuse me for being very nosey (again), but what stainless exhaust manifold are you going for?

Any idea which VW dealer it originated from? :)

0w30 sounds worryingly thin😂 I was under the impression VW initially recommended Quantum 10w40 but then said 5w40. Cannot for the life of me find exactly which 10w40 they recommended however.

I kid you not that is what VW recommended, so that’s what the long life rubbish got changed for.

Its not designed for older engines, its designed for more modern engines on the 2 year service scheme, mostly because you've done an oil change by then with topping it up all the time!

    @lupogtiboy

Has the VW recommended specification for GTi oil changed since production?

I only ask as Customer Service recommended 0w 30 non longlife to me last year when I had my issue last year....

    That sounds like fun.

I wouldn't want to pay a tone the time to take a dash out.

Although I would be paid to do it

It wasn’t fun, Dave the mechanic did use a few choice words when I picked the car up....😂

Just to clarify what I wrote earlier- It was a combination of rotten pipes and air con. evaporator which meant the system was very slowly loosing gas over time....

Works a treat now when it’s warm enough outside to run it all up. :)

    Martin.

  13. Based on what I went through to fix my air con., I would recommend finding a garage you know and trust that has air con. leak testing equipment and get them to test the system out unless you have already done so.

After having two pipes replaced along with a cooling fan, it turned out to be some pinholes in the air con. evaporator outlets where it joined onto the air con. evaporator valve....

Hopefully your issues will be cheaper and easier to fix than mine was 😎

    Martin :)

  14. There was a TPS in Dundee, not too sure if still there though....

    Tayside TPS,

    Myrekirk Road,

    Dundee,

    Angus,

    DD2 4SU.

    01382 614400

Regarding what prices you will pay for parts, I think this will largely depend on the individual TPS outlet you go to.

    Have fun,

    Martin :)

  15. A very big long shot I know:blush: , but might this be an ex. press car- it seems to have a “Volkswagen UK” rear number plate frame, unfortunately I can’t quite see what the picture shows....😥

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F143015918626

(I know a previous owner might have added the ‘frame if it does say Volkswagen UK, but thought it was worth mentioning)

    Martin:)
