    First GTI Upgrades ?

Everyone here seems to have gone for coilovers. Is there a reason no one has gone for something like the Bilstein B12 shock and spring setup ?

    Wheels for GTI ?

I am still trying to get my head around which wheels will work and which don't. What is the size of the standard Bathurst alloys - 6.5J ET43 ? I think I will stick to 15" and I understand that the bore size is 57.1 on the Lupo. I am confused in two primary areas: 1) Width and Offset: I am not sure how the offset interplays with the width of the wheel, for example would a 7J wheel with an ET25 or an 8J wheel with ET20 fit on a slightly lowered (say lowered by 30mm) GTi without rubbing ? 2) Tyre Size: I have seen some wheels that are 15" x7J and have 165/50 or 165/45 tyres fitted. Aren't these tyres too narrow for a 7J wheel given the Bathurst at 6.5J runs 195-205 tyres ?? Thanks for your help
  3. Thanks. I would welcome thoughts on the initial changes I listed
  4. Not being harsh but it looks like he sold to a car dealer. What did he expect, they are in the game to make a profit. TBH, I am not sure the dealer will get that much for it though.
  5. Been posting here for a few weeks and finally picked myself up a Loop GTi. It was the second one I looked at and compared t the first one, was miles better. Not perfect but given the price, I am really happy with it. It is black and completely standard OEM plus optional air con and CD player. It has only had two previous owner, the first for approx the first 11 years of its life and the second for the last year. The second owner was upgrading to an Audi S3 but not before servicing it incl plugs and putting on new brake pads and discs all round In addition to all 3 keys (2 + plastic coding key) and a full set of manuals, it also has a gigantic pile of of paperwork with the original purchase invoice, every MOT and every invoice with servicing and all done at VW for the last 12 years As I mentioned, not perfect and needs a few bits to get it perfect: - A few minor paint marks commensurate with age - Front door cards and trim showing a bit of age - Some of the tyres need changing Other than sorting out the above, I have a few additional plans for it which I would be grateful for some feedback. I was thinking of adding the following - Smoked Side Indicators - Henka wind deflectors - Carbon Fibre effect VW badge on front and back - BBS wheels with black centre and polished rims - Coilovers, maybe AP What do people think of those changes ? Are the smoke indicators and black badges too much ? And not forgotten, a couple of photos of the new baby:
  6. What's the story ? He sold it and now it is being moved on at the same price ? Why annoyed then ?
  7. Not mine, but I quite like this colour scheme for wheels ie black centre with polished rims....

    Lupo VIN

Ah, thanks Martin. The site I was looking at obviously wasn't accurate

    First GTI Upgrades ?

Thank Martyn. I have seen you car and it looks lovely but unfortunately it is out of my price range
  11. I know everyone here says that KW V1 are the best but how do they compare to the AP (in terms of ride, handling and comfort) which are also highly rated ?

    Lupo VIN

What is the code in the VIN that identifies a Lupo (digits 7 and 8 in the VIN) ? Looking on the net, it appears it should be 6X The Lupo I am looking to buy is 6E Is this correct, were there two codes for the Lupo ?
  13. Thanks Silver. I know the ones you mean. I bought a set a few moths ago for my Porsche so as to avoid the orange bulb showing through. Which as the correct ones (pins, voltage and wattage wise) for the GTi ?
  14. Interesting approach - how does that affect the turn signal ? Is the bulb white and the lens makes it yellow or is the bulb yellow and makes no difference ?
  15. OK Clayton, I see what you mean now. How are these de-tangoed ? I am thinking of getting a set as the car I may be buying needs one rear lens as the reverse part is cracked and letting water in. Seeing as I need 1, why not buy 2

    Wheel refurb

Alternatively, you can contact Chris at http://www.exelwheels.co.uk/. Chris will come to you, take your wheels and leave you with some equivalent loan wheels while he refurbs your ones. Again, excellent reputation for service and a high quality job.

    Wheel refurb

These guys are one of the best and have an excellent reputation with people that own high end cars. http://www.lepsons.com/ Not in Cheshire but they do offer a courier service. Prices are on their website.
  18. What do you mean by de-tangoing the cambridge lights - I can't see any orange on them ?

    First GTI Upgrades ?

How do the KW v1 compare to the AP kit which is significantly cheaper ? Also, is the price for all 4 corners or just 2 ?
  20. Yes, I am referring to GTIs currently for sale. About 10-20% say they have had a replacement or refurb gearbox
  21. Hi all, I was wondering if you could help. I am trying to source (or even uncover the part numbers) for the following GTi parts: - GTi Gearstick Knob - Red Upper Door Cards for the front doors Thanks
  22. In looking through the classifieds, I have noticed that there are a fair few cars advertised with a replacement or refurb gearbox. Most of the cars seem to be on around 100k miles and spread across both 5 speed and 6 speed boxes. I would have thought that a VW gearbox would last more than 100k miles. Is this a common issue and one I should budget for if the car is still on its original gearbox ?

    First GTI Upgrades ?

It looks like on the suspension front, the main recommendations are AP, Weitec or KW v1 coilovers or alternatively (and more expensively) Bilsteins. I don't want to lower the car as some people have done here. They look great lowered but there are too may road humps to negotiate around my area so would prefer to stick to the standard height or at a push a very, very slight lowering. Out of the above, which will give: - Pretty much standard height - Comfortable ride - Better handling PS. I should say that on the hadling front, I would look to combine the coilovers with a whiteline rear arb.

    My GTI (tehe)

Great photos. The GTi looks in fab condition. One of the bigger killers of these cars is rust but your one looks timeless. Well done
