  1. Spotted a lovely looking, bright green Lupo this morning going the other way to me. It had probably come off the M25 and was heading to Cockfosters Was it you ?
  2. Thanks Ross. I am not a big fan of the Porsche wheels on the Lupo. The Borbet issue you raise is exactly my problem, it is hard to work which wheels will poke out too much and the nicer ones do seem as of they will poke. I agree, some lowering may need to be done How much poke do you think you can have before exceeding the standard arches ?
  3. Thanks for the feedback. I am not set on a particular wheel but I would liek something with a black centre and polished rim. Ideally deep-ish dish. Wheels like BBS LM, Rnal Turbo, Borbet A wheels have caught my eye. Unfortunately, most of the deep dish alloys seem to be around 7.5J to 8J combined with offsets of around 20-25. These give a poke of around 76mm (an extra 40mm over the Bathurst). Ideally I don't want to run any stretch but if pushed would probably not want to go lower than a 185 width tyre.
  4. My thoughts exactly. I can't see how any oil can last the life of the car. I will get it changed. Other than the right oil, what else will I need eg gaskets etc ?
  5. Is it recommended to change the gearbox oil. A VW specialist told me there is no need to change as the gearbox oil is in there for the life of the car. I know on other cars where the manufacturer says this, enthusiasts recommend to change it. My car has 85k miles - what is the general recommendation on here ?
  6. Loving the car Ross. Looks like it is set for winter now. I am curious as I have been looking at wheels and working out what will fit without rubbing is doing my head in. If I am running standard suspension (or say up to 10mm lower) what width and off set wheels can I get away with before I start getting arch rubbing ? I have been using Will They Fit (http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=205&aspect=45&diameter=15&wheelwidth=6.5&offset=43&width2=205&aspect2=45&diameter2=15&wheelwidth2=6.5&offset2=25#content) but that doesn't necessarily tell me what poke will potentially rub. I think that a Poke more than 57.6mm will rub. Am I right ro can I go wider ?
  7. That is a real nice interior - vote for Benjee 19 from me
  8. Not concerned, my tyre wear seems OK. I just thought that new bushes (either the bushes themselves or during the fitting) might throw the wheel alignment off
  9. Thanks (again) Geoff. My car needs ARB bushes as well. In fact the ARB bushes need doing now. The wishbone bushes will last a little longer but I thought I may as well get both sets done at the same time. Do you need the wheels aligned after changing the bushes ?
  10. Never tried them but these guys seem to specialise in this, in fact that is all they do based on their website: http://www.autokeysquad.com/manufacturers/volkswagen-vw
  11. I would imagine they could need arch rolling as I think they are 8J, depending on offset as well
  12. Thanks Geoff - I know what you mean. f not careful, you can get carried away ! Anyone else ?
  13. When you say "noticeable difference", in what way ? Do they make the ride harder, make the car tramline more etc ? Also, when you replaced the Wishbone bushes, did you add any other powerflex bushes at the same time ?
  14. Hi all, Interested in your advice. The bushes in the front lower wishbone arms are on their way out and I was wondering what I should do, that is: Buy new OEM wishbones that already have the bushes included ?....or....Keep my wishbones and have just the bushes replaced with Powerflex bushes ?Thanks for any advice.
  15. I would say keep it I am a similar age to you and recently bought a GTI. For me, I wanted a small car I could drive around town and actually manage to find car parking spaces ! I was originally drawn to a Fiat 500 Abarth but didn't want to spend that sort of money on a fourth car so started looking around and came across the little Lupo. Fits the bill perfectly and a nice additional benefit is that it is not as common as the Fiat 500 or Mini Cooper S. I don't think age has anything to do with it. Drive it and Enjoy It !

    polyurethane bushes

My GTI needs some front ARB bushes and lower wishbone bushes. Rather than going for OEM replacements I was thinking of maybe changing all the bushes on the car to Powerflex as I suspect they will all be deteriorating to some extent or other given the age. How do the standard Powerflex bushes compare to VW OEM ? Do they make the ride harder or is it just as compliant but with a better performance and longer life ? Also, how easy are the bushes to change ?
  17. Just checked my GTI and the interior light comes on but no buzzing for the headlights. I got the torch out and had a look along the door and frame but couldn't find a micro switch for the buzzer. Anyone know where to look ?
  18. Thanks for the info guys
  19. Depends Amy. Reputable garages charge around £200 to fit them but for that price they would also do a full geometry setup and alignment. AMD for example, a reputable Audi/VW tuner in the South East, charges a fixed £200+VAT for the fitting and 4 wheel laser alignment. If the mechanic is just fitting them and not setting them up properly then I wouldn't pay more than £50-£100 for that. You will still need a proper setup and alignment after having them fitted if you want to minimise uneven tyre wear and proper handling to make the most of the coilovers.
  20. Hi, I am feeling a little perplexed. For the last 5 mins I have been trying to work out how to post in the [Garage] on here but can't seem to find a way of doing it I am sure it is simple but I must be thick as I can't work it out Please help
  21. Hi all, I am thinking of getting the gearbox oil on my new (to me) Lupo GTi. I don't expect it had been changed in its life and would prefer to make sure it has a refresh. What is the recommended (or better) gearbox oil for the 6 speed box ? Thx

    Wheel help

Hi there Marc, I have been trying to get my head around the same issue. I have come to the conclusion that you can extend the wheels approx. 18mm over the original Bathurst alloys before they extend beyond the arch rim and therefore risk risk catching the arch rims on bumps, this is assuming you are running 15" wheels. Use this site http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=195&aspect=45&diameter=15&wheelwidth=6.5&offset=43&width2=195&aspect2=45&diameter2=15&wheelwidth2=6.5&offset2=25#content to work out the numbers. By using this formula: [Poke of new wheel] - [Poke of Bathurst wheel] will tell you how many extra mm towards the wheel arch the new wheels will extend. I would say that a wheel with ET0 will extend well beyond the arch and you will need to roll the arches as well as stretching tyres. Even then, I wuld guess but don't know for sure, there may not be enough roll in the arch to cover the wheel

    Wheels for GTI ?

OK, that sounds about right. Your 7J with ET36 extend an additional 13.3mm more than the Bathursts. It sound slike 18mm is the max for ensuring no rubbing whch would mean on Silver's car, 5mm spacers would fill out the arches nicely without rubbing, assuming 45 aspect tyres that don't have bulging sidewalls
