There is still an art to doing rat cars. How to do it and be tasteful, its the same as the retro rat Beetles, they're amazing, and with the roofrack setup and Cola coolers, trike etc looking all in the right place, cant beat it, apart from a super clean, chocolate coloured, Beetle.
I wasn't saying there isn't an art to it or that all rat cars are thrown together, like I said, it appears MORE effort is needed to make a good rat car than to send one into a body shop and get it to look mint. You misunderstood me obviously. I was saying that alot of the ones you see on display dont appear to do the rat scene justice.
to be fair its the complete opposite to that!
that reference is more apparent to A LOT of the show and shine cars, where they have no clue HOW to modify a car so they get someone else to do it. ok so thats not exactly the same as your example either, but at least MOST of the guys that 'rat' their cars have thought about 'period' (i.e hotrod design etc) where as some of the 'show cars' have put in next to no effort! there are obviously exceptions for each arguement, but i think it is a load of rubbish to say that all forced rat cars are ****!
at the end of the day, why does anyone 'modify' a car? to get attention? and what cars are attracting the most attention...? well i think this topic answers that! "Forced Rat Cars". I think that shows WHY people are doing their cars in this style!
To be honest in my opinion its the finished product that is important especially when it comes to the owners putting them out on display for judges etc, not who put the graft in, again, don't get me wrong, the owners deserves plenty of respect for doing the work themselves, but that isn't the point. Also, I don't remember saying all rats are crap, I admit I dont fully appreciate it but also stated its possible to get good examples of them, so I'm not 'anti-rat'. Plus when I said about good examples being left in the shadows, that wasn't restricted to traditionally modified cars. I've seen brilliantly rat cars that have been left out of the trophies to be beaten by another rat simply because it was covered in tape and you could barely see the bodywork at all. But I also have seen alot of clean cars that have been looked after and you can see plenty of prior thought has been taken involving them, although I have no idea if the thought was by the owner or a bodyshop, and simply because they weren't breaking the boundaries with a new scene their effort wasn't rewarded, again simply because several rat cars had shown up, and in my admittedly limited knowledge of the rat scene they didn't seem to be very well handled jobs, but took the trophies anyway as it was different! I totally understand people wanting the attention and getting it with these cars, and at meets, going to the shops, whatever, they definately get it, and thats great, they're fun cars and thats what its all about, but at shows, in front of judges effort is effort, and I think it should be judged as such. Like I mentioned with the works of art, it doesn't take alot of effort for a toddler to play in paint, but some actual artists spend weeks, months, and years on a single piece and it would never fetch near the same money as the toddler's paintings, simply because its not fresh and new. Thats all I was saying, a good rat is a good rat and deserves to get credit, but that goes for a any other modified car, but it just seems to me that quality seems to be compromised for something different, and not always executed as well as it could be. Rant over!

I'm on 8j and et25 all round mate, back arches have been rolled but coz of the drop it hits the inner liners and the fronts still catch, been told even with the fronts rolled with the drop and 8js on the front theyl still catch, my chassis needs notching badly!!

Hahaha thats ok mate, how low is it?? Mines at 120mm but your skirts looked lower. I thought I had the only low loop round my way!!!

Was having a discussion with a mate about this just the other day, altho I must say I don't understand it or appreciate it, I have spoken to a few lads who have done it to their cars and it seems to take more effort to pull off a good rat car, than to prep one and stick in into a bodyshop to get it looking factory. So I dunno, swings and roundabouts I guess, its like these 2 month old babies having their 'works of art' sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds, anyone can bolt on a buggered bonnet or a rusted up wing and so called discerning people seem to lap it up, whereas the ones that seem to wanna do things properly appear to get left in the shadows.

Yeah? I used to be in the borocruisers thing for a while but lost interest and I heard that went belly up, then when I got my 'grown up' car I dropped of the scene totally. But now I've got my babyL I'm sorta coming back to it!

I'm looking for a few bits and bobs for my lupo gti and I've heard that the gearbox is the same from out of the polo gti, is that right?? If so, does that mean the cables are the same? I've looked around on ebay etc and there seems to be alot more spares available for the polo than the lupo. But if they're using the same parts it'd make it alot easier for me to get the bits I want! Thanks to anyone who can help out!!
