  1. On my Lupo I had the same problem after changing the battery. Turns out it was the starter motor getting tired and not turning fast enough unless the battery was completely charged. New starter solved the problem. To check the alternator, check the voltage with the engine running, on mine the alternator provides over 14V. Only way to check, but voltmeters are not expensive and its the only way to check. Joe
  2. ok they are seriously expensive, but what supercar isn't? Having seen several in the flesh, I want one :-) Back to topic, vw has screwed up big time here, and the politicians will make hay. Unfortunately it may cause the early demise of diesels, and petrols can't hack it. What else can give 450Nm of torque and 200bhp, and still deliver over 40mpg? Joe
  3. Interesting thing here is the manufacturers are caught between a rock and a hard place. To lower NOx emissions (required in the US, and to some extent for EURO 6) you need to lower combustion temperatures IIRC. Lower temperatures in diesels generally increase consumption (CO2), and certainly the trick software in VAG EA189 diesels had this effect. In Europe manufacturers have to reduce CO2 or get fined, and dumb CO2 based tax regimes also push users into low CO2 vehicles. So some poor engineer in VW has been told to solve an impossible problem, so they got creative with the software (easiest solution). Dumb in hindsight but so were square windows in the original comet airliner. Don't get me started on Petrol engines. A 1.0 in a Mondeo? Could not pull a skin off a rice pudding unless you thrash it, a common problem in all modern turbo charged small capacity petrols. Also, coming soon - DPF's for modern direct injection petrols as they emit as many PM10's as diesels. Not condoning VW or any other car company. They all game the system to get as low a value as possible, but gaming is not cheating. FWIW - my SDI is smokey, but who cares, it does 60mpg even with my heavy right foot :-) My Galaxy on the other hand (a 2.0 163 TDCi) only reaches 40mpg if I drive like a nun (35 normally) compared to 50+ according to Ford, but is cheaper to tax as my Lupo is a 2000 MY. Rant over. Joe
  4. Normally at idle the whole car vibrates, annoying and noisy, and it almost seems to resonate. Increasing it takes it away from this resonance (if that's what it is) just making it more comfortable. Dropping it just made it feel uncomfortable, hard to describe really. Lumpy isn't the right word, just made the car more unpleasant, possibly due to the lower frequency vibrations. I didn't drive it with this setting though, just reset it. Going to change the engine mount and try again some point in the future. Fuel filter was changed about six months ago, along with the air and oil filters. It's down on power (gets really smokey above 70mph) so I suspect the inlet manifold is full of carbon. Might clean this out when the cam belt gets done. Joe BTW - initial idle value was as per your how to.
  5. Well hooked up my cheap ebay cable to VCDS-lite (free version) and had a go. In my lupo reducing the rpm made it worse, but increasing it slightly improved matters. Could only increase it by 50rpm for some reason, but even that helped. Joe
  6. Thanks for the reply. I think the pedal box is OK (pedals are all level and other gear changes are ok), and as the dash looks like it's been out it may have even been changed. I'll check though. Might just take the whole lump and gearbox out and fix the lot! Joe
  7. I have a beat up 2000 SDI with 110k on the clock, so only just run in really. Problem is it needs some work and I am not sure if it's worth it (just wish I found this forum before buying it). Some I can do myself, others it's a garage job. Clutch (two learners, the current user finished it off) Engine mount (not dog bone, so quite easy) Cambelt (not done since 40k) Leaking selector seal (ignore?) Lots of play in 1st/2nd and difficult to find gear when cold Won't start unless battery is fully charged (starter motor?) I got it cheap as the electric windows were dodgy (fixed thanks to a how to on here), v stiff bonnet catch (easy fix) and a short MOT (passed no problem). I have also changed the gearbox oil which helped with the gear change a bit. Any tips? I know Rich could probably get it running in short order, but I don't have a pit so major surgery is a PITA to do at home. Problem is it drives really well round town and is seriously economical. Also as it looks ratty, I don't care too much about car park dings :-) Thanks Joe
  8. Can you do this with the "free" version of VCDS-Lite or do you need the $99 registered version? Thanks Joe
  9. Does it still go flat with the -ve lead removed? Some batteries are DOA. To find the circuit that's draining it, assuming it has the same mini fuse box on the battery as the lupo you could check the current drain for each fused circuit on the board. The starter motor is connected directly though. Joe
  10. Just saw one for sale at an independent dealer in Melksham (Wiltshire). I think they wanted £5k for it.
