This weekend I decided to see why my car was misfiring under constant speed. Upon taking off the engine cover one problem was iminant the throttle body was covered in oil, after removing it looking inside the intake manifold it was caked in oil along with the MAP sensor and the pipe located in the middle of it, I cleaned all of it the best I could due to not being able to get a new map sensor, replaced oil and air filters as everything was covered (air filters weren't but were old) I assume this is piston rings, my engine has done 101k. Upon refitting the engine warning light is still on and still a misfire. What would be the best thing to do. Its had new sparks, ht, coil, filters, oil, timing kit, headgasket. Is there a fix or should I invest in a new engine as I can't afford another Lupo. Thanks

I would have thought if the rings were on the way out, the oil would get burnt in the chamber and would get nowhere near the intake? Sounds like an oil breather problem?

Not an expert though.

How could I check? There was oil residue in the inlet ports on the engine but not much however the intake and throttle body was caked and had almost no oil in the engine is that what the metallic pipe is? Breather? Any help appreciated.

Surely the cheapest thing to do would be to get it plugged in to see what faults have been recorded before you start taking drastic and probably unnecessary action.

VAG com can be purchased online, they are expensive around £300 could try finding a local form user who has one?

or just phone around a few garages.

it's a useful tool and is suprising how quickly you can make money back,

the other option is try a ODB scanner can get them off amazon for less then £100 but be warned it only seems to pick up some errors.

i tried it on my previous mk4 golf

Learn to read - sorry missed the bit around you already plugging it in VAGCOM is the way to go tbh

OR, Or you could just buy a cable for £10 and use vcds. But you could spend £300 if you wanted. Who would spend £300 on diagnostics when the car is worth sub £1000?

Lol.

When I said plugged in I meant using the proper tool, not just a generic diag tool, if you're scratching your head it really is the only way to do the job efficiently. A vague misfire code isn't telling you anything that you don't already know, do the job properly and save money in the long run.

One of the previous forum's i have used got really funny about recommending that, or even the "ebay kits"

I think I will have to do that, I didn't want to jump in the deep end but considering its done 101k and my clutch cable being stretched attached to an original clutch I thought I'd just replace the whole thing. I will pop down to the local garage see if they have a vagcom unless there is a kind hearted soul with one in the Leicester area? Haha

Haha no problem, I don't think my local garage has vagcom if I remember rightly its just a general diagnostic machine. Are VW themselves expensive or a vag specialist in the Midlands? Considering I need a new MAP sensor, New injector seals, rocker cover gasket, sump gasket and that part for whatever is causing this not to mention I have a loose steering rack (can pull it towards me slightly, no idea how to fix it) lacquer peel etc its starting to worry me a bit so if the diagnostic is expensive need to rethink my plan.

Also anyone know where I can get some injector seals for the 1.0 injectors? 2 of my plastic retainers and 1 seal has perished

try euro car parts or GSF car parts would be my suggestion - also look on ebay gsf have started selling stuff on there for less for example a full cambelt kit for £60 odd !
