Difference between 1.6 petrol engines

Can someone tell me the differences between Golf mk4's 1.6 8v/16v and the 1.6 engines on lupo/polo gti?

Which one of the 8v and 16v will fit straight on a 1.4s?

I think (rich or someone will correct me If I'm wrong) the 1.6 golf block is the same as the lupos block, only difference would be internals and also the head has been modified to give more power. So the cams and port flow is different when compared to a golf 1.6.

The Lupo gti block is unique to the gti so as to fit the 6 speed gearbox, I know its totally different to the polo gti block even though they share the same engine code, as you can't fit a lupo gti gearbox to a polo gti engine. I don't think the golf 16v engine has the variable inlet camshaft either, another gti engine specific part, though this is shared with the polo gti engine...

I think the easiest conversion to get a 1.6 16v engine in your lupo would be to find a rear ended polo gti and swap everything over, engine, gearbox, looms, ecu etc....

Problem is even polo gti is very rare around this lands so finding a gti engine is almost impossible. On the other hand you can find a golf 1.6 pretty much everywhere. If the golf and the polo gti have the same bottom end or at least the exact same mounts is pretty much enough for me. I was curious if there are more differences than the head which could be easily swapped. Not necessary with a gti head but with a 1.4 16v head as I've seen a few conversions around here. I believe it should work if the bottom ends are the same.

Ah didn't know that! (Makes sense of course) quite a few ancineries are shared tho right?

I've been looking for a polo gti engine lately and found none. I'm not going to search anymore, it's no use.

But I'm very interested in the 1.6 SR engine found on the golf. I've heard is more 'torquey' than the 16v model and one of the best petrol engines vw ever made.

Most likely no one made this conversion but it's worth asking. Engine mounts are my biggest concern. Then are the gears. If I get the 1.6sr engine with its gearbox wont that make the gears very short considering the wheel diameter difference between lupo and golf? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of shorter gears (better acceleration) but I still need 5th gear to be ~2000rpm to 50mph for cruising.

Back in the 1980's the 1.6 and 1.8 litre Golf engines R4 shared the same basic layout the block was the same the difference in capacity due to different cranks and it was possible but not recommended to put the famous 16v head onto a 1.6 block. It wasn't recommended because the 1.8 16v block had extra oil pathways. These units were though a fundamentally different design from the 1.3 litre engine that was to be developed into the 1.4 Lupo unit, as was the 1.6 which was a further development of this earlier engine.
