Lupo GTI - Buying Advice

I had spotted that one this morning guys, thanks for the heads up.

As you can tell we want to get an original spec one, and I was instantly put off by those rear lights and silver trim to the interior. Maybe best to avoid as the boot does look dodgy.

The search continues...

Thing is Eddd, my '54 plate has 58k on the clocks and is standard apart from the KW V1 coilovers and soon to be brake upgrades; Brembo G60 discs up front and HEL braided s\s lines all round, but it has a full VW\VW Specialist history and whilst it has a few marks on the body it's in good condition.

I drive it and I look after it and no expense is spared on servicing, so whilst I understand you want one that "hasn't been played with", you shouldn't overlook one just because it's not totally standard. Especially if those modifications are easy to reverse.

I agree with this but stuff like G60 discs and coilies are arguably a beneficial improvement, and are easy to reverse. Not sure why you'd reverse either, especially as you can simply increase the height of your coilies if needbe, but I can see why some might want to do so. The negative effects are also cosmetic, so lowering the car too low to the point it's bottoming out might leave your rear bumper a bit scuffed however a good bodywork place can sort that.

An aftermarket air filter though will cause permanent and irreversible (within a price range) wear on your engine and that's why I don't like it when people fit them, especially to GTi's. If it's the noise people are after, why not source a second hand air box from a scrappy, and drill some holes pre-filter side. That will give you the crazy induction noise people crave without losing the filtration quality. You have to wonder why companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, sell their cars with... what's that? Paper air filters as standard. You have to wonder why their service replacements are.... uhmmm, paper replacements. These guys are producing tuned vehicles designed for performance, yet you don't see a K&N BMC Pipercross Viper whatever air filter in site.

Fact is, a decent quality paper air filter is able to filter roughly 99% of airborne particles, period. A K&N air filter (according to their website) has a maximum (being the key word) filtration of 92%. The reason the word maximum is key is because a clean oiled filter is actually LESS efficient at filtering than a dirty oiled filter, and therefore there is an implied 'bedding in' process at which point LESS THAN 92% of particles are being filtered. So how many? 60%? 80%? 90%? Who knows? Do they? Probably not... All that time there's airborne **** flying through your engine, essentially sanding away your performance. Once your clean filter is dirty, then it will filter 92% of airborne particles.... which is STILL less than a paper filter. There's plenty of evidence to show that over time, an aftermarket 'oiled filter' will ultimately REDUCE your engine's performance simply due to excessive wear.

The only place they are really used and accepted is on the track where an engine will be rebuilt regularly. That I can understand, that I can accept. What I can't accept is someone fitting one to their pride and joy which they tootle to work everyday.

Yes, I bought a K&N filter, but after reading research have decided against fitting it.

I have spare front bumpers galore, so whilst the one she is currently wearing has some scuffs, give me a weekend and she will be good as need be for a 91/2 year old car. My rear bumper is not marked from lowering.

I also have an attic full of spares and parts! I keep looking at spare bonnets when they come up, but I don't have a garage and as it wouldn't fit in the attic, I would have to hang it on the lounge or dining room wall. Somehow I think TSO may not be too pleased.

Take your old bumper off and DIY respray with rattlecans :D If you ever go a show or somewhere, you can put your nice one on :P

Great advice, thank you.

Do you know of anyone on here selling a gti soon?

First one is nice although the exhaust is looking a little tired.

Second one is overpriced due to that damage.

That third one is absolutely beautiful.

The third one is very nice, however we ideally would like a silver one.

What do you guys make of this one;

Don't like the wheels in grey or the badges like that, but worth a look do you think?

Thank you for the help, determined to get a good one :)

My winter wheels are that colour, currently waiting to get my silver ones refurbed though.

You could get them back to OEM from VW for £60 a wheel and new centres for about £12 each.

VW roundels would cost about £30 to put back to the chrome originals, but someone may swap them.

That car also has a smoothed front bumper

Thanks for the help guys.

We actually went to see this one on Saturday.

It sounded great on the phone and the guy said it was mint condition inside and out (no dents/scratches).

Unfortunately when we got there and had a look that wasn't the case. There was a big scrap on the bumper on the nearside, dents on the back panels, electric window not working and exhaust looked very wonky. A real shame. I know we can't expect perfect, and I offered a slightly lower price so we could fix damage, but no joy.

Im on the look out at the moment too. Sold my GTI 2 years ago as I had owned it for 2 years and fancied a change. Looking at selling my current car and buying another as it would be cheaper to run.

I also called this guy and he said it was great condition. Was going to view at the weekend but didn't have the time. Im glad I didn't bother!

I owned a silver GTI before which put me off that one a little bit, think I may have to wait out and get one which isn't silver this time!

Tornado Red one available to the right buyer. I would like to keep it but I have too many toys and not enough time.
