Cost to repair 6 speed gearbox!

My Lupo Gti 6 speed gearbox lost 1st gear, the synchro failed and took first out at the same time. The garage showed me it's £2000 to buy a new gearbox from Vw!

I managed to find a second hand box not too far from me for £300 but once fitted to the car found out second gear didn't work on that one! So the garage sent the first box off to be reconditioned. I've been quoted £800+Vat to repair that box!

So I asked to see if they could repair one box using the other to save on cost but apparently second gear is attached to first so still need to replace the part.

Does anyone else feel this is rather expensive or is that actually the likely costs?

I've just had a 6 speed box refurbed (new bearings/synchros/oil ect) for £300 (cash!) by Road & Race Transmissions in Sevenoaks. May be worthwhile giving them a call and see what they can do, 01959 525 105

the cost of a new box is stupid...

youve been very unfortunate getting a dodgy one to replace it... i looked into getting mine refurbed when i lost 4th and prices were anything from £500+ (depending on what it was). i spoke to a gearbox specialist and they said it would be £1000 max if it needed all the parts but they wouldnt know until it was in bits.

If i were you, i would look for another second hand box... i know its going to be possibly another £300 but its better than another £600...

Send me both & £250.

I'll send you back one with new bearings, oil and it shall be rebuilt with the genuine gasket stuff which is £50 a tube.

I do like having spares of these things kicking about.

I will even use the uprated parts from the new TSI 02T boxes because I'm smart like that.

Cheers guys. Its already in the workshop being done but just feel im being overcharged. If i had more time i would have shopped around but the cars in the garage waiting on the MOT and they sent the gearbox off.

I know it does seem like a really good offer and wish I knew sooner but perhaps I can arrange something with the second box. It's also a big risk to take sending 2 boxes off and £250 cash to someone I don't know lol already been messed about twice on Club Lupo for sales section.

All I'd be doing is going to see my mate who is a vag box tech, getting it all switched out and repaired, one decent box built back up with replacement parts, some spares for myself and a few quid his way.

I'd then post you the rebuilt box back and then carry on my search for cheap GTIs with knackered boxes to repair/fence on.

I benefit from spares for potential 6n2 six speed conversions.

Sorry guys I didn't even know you had written a response! Didn't get any notifications until now!

I've got my car back and for now it's all gone on the credit card. And got my other box in bits in the shed. Apparently 1st and second gear are joint is that correct?

And G_t_i I have read a lot of forums saying how good the gearboxes are and that they're much better than the polo ones but I have also read a few people have had issues with 1st gear.

Personally I don't know whether I've had a lot of bad luck getting 2 gearboxes that are broken or whether it's common.

Buy a new bearing and seal set on ebay or wherever. Just make 100% sure all the bearings are decent brands like timken, fag, skf etc. Then take it to a gearbox place. Takes about an hour or two for an experienced person to do. Drain it before. They'll clean it in their machine wash thing. For a 085 box, I pay £50 and some beer/coffee/alcohol/chockies. :)

I have just “rebuilt” my 6 speed as I changed the final drive ratio.

it’s not as easy to do as a 5 speed and will cost more as there is no way around breaking the 5th gear synchro in the process of stripping the box. The synchro I think is 40 quid ish. Also new bolts are recommended as they are stretch items

everything in the 5th/6th gear cover is press fit so a pig to get off

the strip took me a good few hours and same with reassembly (mind you I did have to swap output shaft gears onto the new output shaft)

£1000 sounds very steep for the job but it’s not as easy as doing a 5 speed box
