Central locking woes (1.7 S SDI)

Hey all - this is my first post after purchasing a rather tired 2000 1.7 S SDI with 155k on the clock.

It's got it's share of problems that I'm working through, one of which is the central locking. It's as if it doesn't have it at all! I can lock both doors and the boot with the key but none of these operate the central locking.

The V5 definitely states it's an S so it should have central locking. The previous owner also stated that the central locking didn't work so it's assumed to be there.

The odd this is that VCDS-Lite cannot find the controller on channel 35 so I can't see what it's playing at.

Not sure if it helps/is related, but there is a red LED by the drivers door pin, but this doesn't come on when the doors are locked. Not sure if it's existence means the car should have central locking?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Tim

Sounds to me like they've removed the fuse (quite a common fix for buggered central locking). I suggest checking the fuses for the CL. You never know, it might work, however I'm guessing it's bollocked and that's why they removed it. If it's any solace, mine is playing up too (SDI as well :( )

Cheers Skezza - I never thought of checking the fuse. Idiot :) I'll let you know how I fare!

You were absolutely bang on - no fuse. And I can see why! A so far random combination of some doors locking, all doors locking windows going up and down :)

Need to spend some more time on it to see if I can identify a pattern...

Yep, doesn't surprise me. A common fix on any car with central locking problems.

Is it consistent? Does your boot lock? If you lock your drivers door, do all your doors lock, including boot? Same for passenger door? God knows about the windows going up and down, but that doesn't sound good.

My worry would be that it could be linked to your CCM. 99% of CL problems on Lupo's are caused by faulty microswitches and bad solder which is cheap to fix, but when CL plays up due to a CCM problems, then you have a nightmare on your hands. They're about £50 to replace, but more importantly they're hard to get to. I believe you have to remove the entire centre console. I don't believe you have to code them though, so it should just be plug and play!

no its worse than that, the convenience module is tucked nicely up behind the fuse box and relay panel and its an absolute nightmare to get to. i'd probably leave the fuse out unless youve got a lot of spare time.

I also have central locking problems with my S SDi, but with a twist...

The 'anti hijack' button inside the car works fine and locks both doors and the boot. However, when locking the doors from the outside, only that door locks, leaving the other door and the boot unlocked. I could put the key into all all three locks and lock them independently, but at some point before I bought it, the boot lock has been changed and an additional key wasn't supplied. So, when I park up I have to lower the drivers window, lean in, press the anti hijack button, then hold the key in the locked position to raise the window :rolleyes:

I really need to locate that convenience unit but I just can't see it. I've removed the lower half of the dash around the fuse box but still can't see it :angry:

Like Geoff said, if it does turn out to be your CCM, it might not be worth it.

@Paul, yours sounds like it could be the microswitches rather than the CCM, although it's strange how only anti-hijack works, and a pain I imagine.

The delock guide might just give us a clue how to get the main barrel loose before having to remove the mech. It's a risky process I believe (me and Geoff have chatted about it before) but to do it, you must loosen this barrel off then, the two larger torx ones. I'm not very confident about this kind of thing, but I might have a try. Depends really. I fancy fitting remote central locking, which to be honest, is something I will do in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks Skezza :) Please could you tell me where the microswitches are located?

I'm tempted to take my Lupo to an auto electrician and ask them to diagnose and repair the fault because you're right, at the moment it's a pain to lean in and press the anti hijack button then wait for the window to go up, especially when it's raining!

The microswitches are located in the central locking mech. Removing it is quite a job, but any VW specialist could do it for you in about 5 minutes (VW specialist near me had it off literally in minutes). I am desperate to try it myself but if you put it back together wrong you can cause the door not to open or destroy the lock or something. It's a bit of a scary thought lol!

Geoff has done this, and others on here, but there isn't a proper step by step, it's a case of working on the MK4 Golf/MK4 Passat step by step and using a bit of intuition.

Wonder if this is useful. Probably not. You have to remove the barrel before you can remove the mech I believe though.
