comdw
My power steering pump is having issues - loud noises when turning steering at all (especially with low revs, no gas), but more worryingly the belt drive wheel for the pump is visibly jumping every now and then even at idle.PAS fluid is all gone (could be the cause or a symptom of pump failure) so will be topping up first thing, but worried about risk of losing the aux belt altogether. So I just wondered what else it was driving - alternator presumably, what about water pump? How much damage is it likely to cause or is it just going to be an inevitable break down (flat battery or over heating)?
James827
if you have aircon that will be on there, on my SDI the Water pump is not actually driven from the timing belt but the Aux belt, you can tell because of the domed type of pulley.itas a but like this
RS6plusMTM
On the AMF I'm pretty sure the water pump is driven by the cam belt as the wheel is toothedAs James pointed out if you have aircon, that runs off the AUX belt along with alternator and pas
RS6plusMTM
Yep, AMF water pump is driven of the cam belt, it is the toothed wheel in the middle-right of the block in this picture
electricracer
check your alternator pulley it has a clutch built in, when the clutch (goes solid) fails the belt makes a heck of a noise and jumps around all over the place. its the same on most vag cars around the same year so do a search on how to check/replace. comdw
Thanks guys. The aux belt isn't making any noise continuously, just every now and then at idle there'll be a sound like something catching and if I look down towards the power steering pump I see the wheel jump to the left briefly at the same time. James827
have you checked to see if that that pulley is loose?
