renandstimpey
My GTi felt like it was losing power a little whilst on the m6 tonight, as I pulled up the sliproad off junction 10 it stalled at about 2k revs, and hasn't started since. The engine is turning over fine, it just won't fire. The plugs and coil packs are checked fine, there is power to everything, the fuel pump appears to be buzzing as usual when you turn the ignition on, the epc light goes out, along with the "check" light and the abs light on the dashboard when you turn the key, the battery light stays on....Help! renandstimpey
Mine didn't..Dare I ask, much damage, other than getting a new belt fitted?
Bickerton
Just check your belt before panicking The top cover is easy to remove, just two clips and gives access to both belts to check em. Googogooogo !
renandstimpey
Will do....forgive my ignorance, it's the black plastic cover on the left side of the engine (as you open the bonnet and look at it)?
Bickerton
Yup
renandstimpey
Ok....it's definitely NOT the cambelt! The belt around the camshaft pullys and the large belt that goes into the bowels of the engine are both intact and very tight....which is nice!(breathes HUUUUGE sigh of relief!) Bickerton
Awesome news. That's as far as I can help without just guessing I'm afraid
renandstimpey
Awesome news. That's as far as I can help without just guessing I'm afraidWell it's helped a little, at least I know they are ok...they are around the three yearly change period, saying that the belts are in great condition - of course those plastic tensioners are the issue
Bickerton
When i had my issue (before I found it was my belt) some people mentioned a relay or something that is linked to immobilizer
renandstimpey
Cheers, I'll bear that in mind...I've got a mobile mechanic's number a few of my workmates use, he's very good apparantly...fingers crossed he can pop over tomorrow
CasperGTI
Crankshaft sensor?? Is the engine sparking?
Defcon5
If it was the immobilisor it would start then cut out.As Casper says check the sparks are firing, and check fuel is getting to the cylindersGet it on VAGCOM if you can, saves guessing
renandstimpey
I unplugged each of the ht leads and checked that they sparked when I turned the key in the ignition - they all worked fine, so I'm sure it is firing on all 4 cylinders. renandstimpey
For a moment I thought it may be the fuel pump, as I didn't hear it whirring when you turn the ignition on first time....now I'm not so sure, plus which I've had a look through the fuses in the fuse box in case it's something REALLY stupid! Got an auto electrician coming out after lunch today, fingers crossed when he plugs his gear in it will give us a clue....'cos I'm all out of ideas! renandstimpey
Right, the mechanic has just been and gone, no fault codes whatsoever. When it turns over, he thinks it sounds unusual compression-wise, his opinion is that the belts may have slipped a tooth, or the head gasket may have gone
Bickerton
Did he not have a compression tester?
Bickerton
Either way, it may seem daunting to do it but i split my head etc down of a weekend when my cam belt snapped and managed to fix it all for the price of a cambelt change at a garage.Get testing first before you go any further thou
renandstimpey
Did he not have a compression tester? No, apparently he needed a longer adaptor to pop into the hole where the sparkplug goes, which he doesn't have? Either way, I'll now have to ring Midland VW Monday and get it towed there somehow...
Bickerton
Halfords sell compression testers for £20 which includes said adaptor. If your commute to work is anywhere near bedworth you're more than welcome to borrow mine

Wolves to Smethwick, about 12 miles I think.....whilst I would like to think that I could attempt to fix this myself, my skills (or lack thereof), lack of proper tools and the need to get it sorted asap as I need my car for work mean I'm going to have to get the garage to take a look. Midland VW have serviced the GTi since I've owned it, and I know they are decent at what they do so it looks like they will be getting some of my savings...
