Valve stem oil seals...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Am thinking of changing the valve stem oile seals on my 1.4 16v S Lupo. Wondered if anyone had done them, if they can be done without taking the head off....and if anyone had any tipd for when doing them.

I am trying to cure excessive oil consumption, and was gonna try this first.

Oil useage looke like valve stems passing....

Only other thing i was gonna ask was is changing the piston rings on these easy enough and where is a good place to buy engione spares from.... I have rebuilt plenty of engines before, but dont really want to do a full strip and re-build on this car unless i have to - its simpy the wofes run around....but the plume of oils smoke the car emits is really doing my head in!

Any advise much appreciated!

Cheers

Hmmm.. Sounds like what mine is doing? Took it to a garage who was certain it was valve stem seals, says they did a pressure test and wanted £400 for new seals.. Then took it 2a VW specialist for a 2nd opinion who was certain it would be piston rings just by the amount of soot on the back of my car.. Carried out a borescope (sp) turns out a ring has badly scored the bore. And when doing a strip down and rebuild he mentioned something to do with removing the crank in these engines due to it being ally??

How much oil does yours burn exactly?

I am putting in just over half a litre every 500 miles. However, back off the throttle so that the engine is on overrun, then pull away without any harsh throttle and a furking great plume of blue smoke will come out! it is definatley burning excissive oil.

The car is black, so difficult to see any soot residue.....

whats the easiest way of geting the engine code for my car? can you get it from the chassis no?

ideally shouldnt be any blue smoke but have you looked in you handbook to see the spec for oil consumption? i used to work for btoyota and their spec was 1 litre every 600 miles, dont know what vw is. valve stem oil seals can be done without the head removed but you generally need a special tool that isnt cheap. one way of possibly telling if there is a ring or bore issue is a compression test if its low then squirt some oil in the bores and retest, should improve if its a ring/bore issue. also if you go the route of replacing rings the heads off so stem seals wont be that big a job anyway. hope that helps a little.

Hmm, mine burns around half a litre every 1000-1200 miles but theres no smoke what so ever and never any real suttyness on my exhaust.

I think its just because I thrash my car an awful lot.

cheers.

Handbook says around half liter every 1000 miles i think - or was it a litre - regardless it suprised me. Ive never had a car that manufacturers quotes as expecting to use so much oil - hope the Cat can handle it.

Definatley smoking. will borrow a compression test kit and give the cylinders a squeeze - seems to make sense to do this before getting too intrusive.

Has anyone got any feedback on the bottom ends of these engines - what they are prone too.

- or a link to a thread?

check its a 1000 miles not kilometres thats how toyota do it, which is roughly 600 miles. i agree 1 litre per 600 miles is alot and if your using that much the point in changing the oil on service might aswell just change filter. i think its generally due to th positive crankcase ventilation which is joined into the air intake system and allows oil into the intake. also has it definately got the right oil in? and you can get engine oil additives that are meant to improve things like this, might be worth a go if you cant be bothered.

This is exactly the same problem as mine but I have a yellow car so it has to be washed twice a week to keep it bloody clean! Also get the same problem when you come off the pedal and have it in overrun then you only have to put the slightest bit of power on and the amount of smoke that comes out the pipe is stupid! Sometimes cant even see out the back window :/ Ive been told its the Seals so im going to have a crack at that first then give it a run for a week or two to see if this has cleared the problem, if not then piston rings :) I have to top up every two weeks depending how much I drive.

Thats the seals yes, they are something like £4 each though.

dont mean to spam your thread but my car is reading high on the emissions and i cant get it to pass for the MOT the readings are

  • co 0.67

  • hc 241

  • lambda 1.10

  • then the second test with the cat i got

  • 0.92

  • 363

  • 1.07
    the limits are

    • 0.30

    • 200

    • 1.03
i also find myself filling my engine with oil regularly have tried injection cleaner and recently had a service i am yet to find someone with a compression kit, was wondering if anyone could shed some ideas.been thinking of doing rings and seals while its apart. i have also found oil in spark plug whole no.1

mine has averaged about 270 miles per litre. Around 8000 miles since passed in june and roughly 30 litres... Ridiculously expensive but due to some Tw*t putting my windscreen through and various other damages to car, My engine funds have been taken from me. I need to start using a thicker oil but dont know what grade to use? cheaper way to get around the problem temporarly?

You will just burn oil like its going out of fashion. I suppose at some point it will have that much oil in the cylinders that it is unable to ignite the fuel.

Try an xW50 oil, see if that helps

Wont make the engine go bang then? As im debating on weather to buy my old car back and I know that was an issue with it I only want it for 6 months to get me to work and save for a lupo gti just dont want it going bang after a month
