Engine Check Fault Codes Any Ideas??

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

my check light came on yesterday and I got it scanned by a mate at his garage and the fault codes which came up are:

17559 - fuel trim lean

16786 - egr flow excessive

he seems to think it could be a small air leak, anyone have any ideas ??

i had the front lambda sensor changed a few months back if that matters

any assistance would be appreciated!

This is whats related to the first code, not much help. but gives you an idea.

17559/P1151/004433 - Long Term Fuel Trim Additive Air; Bank 1; Range 1: System too Lean

Possible Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active

Possible Causes
  • Intake System faulty/leaking
  • Fuel Pressure, Fuel Pressure Regulator and Fuel Pump faulty
  • Fuel Injectors faulty/leaking
  • Exhaust System faulty/leaking
  • Activated-Charcoal Filter/System faulty/leaking
  • Secondary Air Injection System faulty/leaking
  • Lambda/Oxygen Sensor(s) before Catalytic Converter faulty
  • Lambda/Oxygen Sensor(s) after Catalytic Converter faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check Intake System for Leaks
  • Check Fuel Pressure, Fuel Pressure Regulator and Fuel Pump
  • Check Fuel Injectors
  • Check Exhaust System for Leaks
  • Check Activated-Charcoal Filter/System
  • Check Secondary Air Injection System
  • Check Lambda/Oxygen Sensor(s) before Catalytic Converter
  • Check Lambda/Oxygen Sensor(s) after Catalytic Converter
Second is this:
16786/P0402/001026 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR): Excessive Flow
Possible Symptoms
  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
  • Reduced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
  • Reduced Power Output/Engine running rough
  • Increased Emissions

<a name="Possible_Causes">

Possible Causes

  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve stuck open/leaking/faulty
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System leaking/faulty
  • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve faulty

Possible Solutions
  • Check/Clean Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System
  • Check/Replace Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve
  • Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve

nice1 casper very informative as ever!!

how would you approach this?

i dont wanna just start replacing parts for the sake of it

is there anyway to tell for example of of the sensors have gone?

i know when my lambda sensor went the diagnostics print out said faulty front lambda sensor needs replacing or something similar....

System too lean could be caused by an air leak between the TB and the head, so could be a pipe or gasket that has perished. Also, can be caused by a dead charcoal cannister.

Its difficult to pinpoint it really unless you have the diagnostic software to interogate it a bit more.

Id just work through the list, And i am also confused about the egr one, i didnt think the sport had it? There should be a valve on the exhaust manifold if it does have it.

If it does, take it out and clean out the valve, and pop it back in. Get the faults clered and see if it comes back.

The cold winter weather does to strange things to cars, take the alfa for example... leave that in the cold/snow for a week and nearly every fault light will come on when you start it, settles down after about an hour of running and the lights go out!

Ok yeah you do have an egr valve.

Id remove it and clean out the valve to start off with, id think they might be related.

A stuck open egr valve would cause the system to run lean. As it supplies the exhaust gas straight in to the inlet manifold, So in theory if its stuck open then it willcauls it to lean out.
