HOW TO: Fit Camber Shims On A GTi Or Sport

Recommended Posts

Before i begin, DISCLAIMER:

This is how i did it, use this as a guide only. I take no responsability for your incompetance, or if it goes wrong.

Start off by removing your wheel:

Next, Make sure the handbrake is off!! Undo the disc screw and the two 13mm bolts on the back of the caliper, you may need a 15mm to told the sliding pin whilst undoing it. Remove the disc, pads and move the caliper out of the way. Also prize off the centre hub nut cap with a screwdriver.

Next get a 3ft breaker bar (the centre nut is torqued to 200nm) and a 12 point socket to remove the centre nut. Take off the nut and remove the Bearing/Hub assy.

IMG_4722.jpg

Then Undo the ABS sensor plug

IMG_4726.jpg

Then undo the 4 bolts attatching the stub axle to the rear beam and remove it in one peice.

IMG_4728.jpg

Now we are ready to set the shim up, Firstly read the instructions and pay attention to the two key points here, or you will get it horribly wrong!:

IMG_4736.jpg

Consult the table and decide on which settigns you want to use, set them on the shim, top number on the paper is top number on the shim etc etc. For this, we use the Arosa setting as the rear beams are the same for bolt PCD.

IMG_4731.jpg

Mark out the tangs to cut out, And remove them, you must cut very carefully and then break them off one side at a time, they will snap very easily.

IMG_4733.jpg

IMG_4734.jpg

Now this is the bit to get it round the ABS sensor.

Firstly put three small blobs of super glue on the shim at three points, 3oclock 6oclock and 9oclock (top of shim willbe cut off) this will hold the shim together when you cut it. and is a must as they become very flimsy.

Place the shim with the correct orentation for the side of the car you are doing and put in place with the 4 bolts.

IMG_4737.jpg

Now go round the back and with a marker, mark a line tracing the back of the stub axle/rear beam profile on to the shim, take out the four bolts and remove it again.

IMG_4738.jpg

IMG_4739.jpg

Then trim the section out that you have marked. You can stay a good 5mm away from the line, its ouly a guide. BE VERY CAREFUL, the shim will easily break. Id sudgest cutting it in very small peices.

IMG_4740.jpg

Assemble the stub axle together with the disc dust cover etc etc and put the shim on the back IN THE CORRECT ORENTATION!

IMG_4741.jpg

Se how it now clears the sensor

IMG_4742.jpg

Loctite on the bolts before you assemble and then put the stub axle back on to the rear beam, tighten the bolts form the thinnest part of the shim outwards. I started at the top left then went top right, BL then BR. Tighten the bolts and then torque to 45ftlb.

IMG_4744.jpg

Put the bearing/hub assy back on to the car and tighten the 12 point nut to 200NM, spin the hub as you are tightening to get it to seat.

IMG_4720.jpg

Now check that the shim has seated correctly and the axle does not move.

IMG_4747.jpg

If all is well, put the disc back on, and secure with the screw. Then put the pads back in and assemble the caliper back together. Put the centre nut cap back on and jobs done!

Wheel back on and enjoy the results:

This is the standard wheel Alignment setup. The lupo GTI already has quite a large amount of neg camber.
