Last night Derren brown predicted the lotto numbers and all 5 came out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyrB-xfcI9s

Hes will explain how hes done it on friday night, but i am interested to hear your views on it.

People are going to jump the gun and say oh its to do with still cameras etc. . . but i dont think it will be that simple because anybody could do that. my guess is to do with previous lotto results and the more common numbers etc. . .

he didnt actualy predict them before the numbers came out which i thought he would .. but he got around it by saying he cant show them for legal reasons .. etc.... so he knew the numbers then just tricked us in beliving he made the prediction etc... good trick tho.. dont know how he done it .. we;; never know..

I think theres a genuine legal reason, BBC will clearly hold the rights to showing the numbers first. It will be either a system hes worked up with probabilities etc or a verrrry clever trick.

Either way I love watching his programs.

Have to find out on Friday ey!

Yeah i thought it was a bit wierd how he already picked the numbers, but like he said, it was live! So there was no way he could know what the numbers were! Clever stuff ;)

Independent random variables. ;)

One radio station this morning reckon he'd pre recorded all the possible combinations. Yeah, Derren's got time to record all 13,983,816 possibilities, I'm sure...

lol!

He said hes worked on this for over a year. I think its down to the number of times each number has come out and abit of goodluck. a university did it a few yrs ago and got like 4 numbers or 5 i cant remember.

Yeah he said it took him a year! Not like he did it out the blue really! You cant really cheat with live results tbh!

Does make you wonder tho, how! We will find out Friday ;)

I did see the horse racing one also! That was good and clever also. Was the same as the lottery, couldnt cheat with live results!

It would take a large amount of luck to predict all 6 this way because they are independent random variables - each draw is completely independent of previous and the results of previous draws do not have an impact on the next draw.

Think of it like a coin toss - there's an equal chance it could be heads or tails each time, regardless of whether you got heads or tails the previous time.

Here endeth the maths lesson.

yeh but if it lands on heads 5 times out of 5. and you had to guess what the next one would be, even tho its still a 50/50 chance i think u would choose heads.

Is it actually a live draw though?

Big Brother is "live" but with a 10 mins delay for them to edit out conversations that they're not allowed to transmit etc.

I didn't actually watch the programme though so can't comment on what actually occurred in the show.

I saw black come out 11 times at the casino once that's a 1/2048 chance of happening if you'd put 10squid on at the start you'd have you'd have 20k at the end of it my mate put 100 on each of the last 3 reds until he ran out of money lol

I've read his book, it's amazing how easy it is to use the powers of suggestion like he does, his skills are just perfected so much making his powers of suggestion so subtle...

I still have no idea how he did the lottery numbers though

He won't have worked it out on probability as there's something like 14 million combinations and they are, as said already completely independant of the draw previously.

For example there is nothing to say that the same numbers don't come out 2 weeks running, however the probability of it happening is almost as small as being hit by lightning... twice... while wearing a tutu!!

Camera trickery is the only way I can think it's been done

It was live yeah! There was a few seconds delay because thats what happens but it was live!

Is it what happens? Do you work in TV? can you be sure of that? <_<

The trailer for the programme said he would be using deception or distraction for these 'events'.

If you look at the plinth the white balls are on, he has to squeeze between it and the wall facing front; ordinarily, you would just walk behind it and then turn to face the camera. I reckon the numbered balls were placed from behind the wall across the gap as the draw ended. The white backs of the balls could have been shells into which a full ball is inserted.

The viewer will have been watching the draw on screen and Derren Brown, not the balls.

The trailer for the follow up programme has him hold up a snowflake. Clue to some maths theory or another distraction?

Or was it all done backwards?
