RobinA3
the 1.6 16v gti engine in the polo gti and lupo gti do have variable valve timing its only inlet camshaft variable valve timing''LUPO GTi Volkswagen is expanding its range with the introduction of the Lupo GTI. The most performance oriented production Lupo the GTI will be powered by a 1.`6-litre` 125 bhp engine. This will take it from `0-60` mph in a shade over eight seconds and on to a top speed of 127 mph. The Lupo GTI weighs just 978 kg, a figure achieved through the bonnet, doors and wheel arches being made of light weight aluminium. This helps it to combine excellent performance with a combined fuel consumption figure of more than 40 mpg. The engine, which was introduced new to the Volkswagen range in February under the bonnet of the Polo GTI, features variable timing on the inlet camshaft, leading to a flat torque curve and maximum pulling power at 3,000 rpm. To accommodate this extra power the Lupo GTI features disc brakes all round, ventilated at the front, and ABS with electronic brake force distribution. Not only do the engine and aluminium body panels distinguish the GTI from other Lupos the exterior has also been restyled. Gone are the cute looks and flared wheel arches, side skirts, deep front sill, spoiler bumper with integrated air inlets, mesh grille and `15-inch` alloy wheels give the Lupo a chunky purposeful appearance, while at the rear a roof spoiler, twin `centrally-mounted` chrome exhaust pipes and a GTI badge complete the look. The specification is also high with ABS, twin airbags, remote central locking with alarm, power steering, adjustable steering wheel, `Isofix-standard` child seat fittings, electric windows and a radio/cassette are all standard. The Lupo GTI will be available to order in the UK from the end of the year, when prices will be announced.'nicked from another webpage somewhere! M1 Lupo
Could it be modded to have VVT on the exhaust camshaft?
gargoil
Would be very hard to do . Other mods like turbocharging or supercharging or buy a bigger engine would be simpler and more effective. VVT on both inlet and exhaust cams still have the same prob that you have to rev the engine like feck to get the car to fly. Best known example of this is Honda with the VTEC system! Gives Bhp increase but dosen't really give you any great torque gains though as all it is doing is increasing engine breathing at high rpms, isn't changing effective displacement(turbocharging etc.) or numerical displacement(bigger engine). gargoil
S'pose I could of typed that to make sense but I've just been out in the snow and my hands r freezin' :baa:
Putney
The vetec engine also had to be balanced to allow the higher rev limit. Thats when it gets really complicated. Just supercharge it if you want more power. or drop a 1.8 turbo engine in it.
EssexLoop
ive never known a company to offer supercharging for the a GTi, does anyone else?
Putney
Along time ago i think there was a kit being mentioned on this forum. the problem is the gti engine belts are on one side. so there isn't that much room between the wheel arch and the engine. EssexLoop
so if you had a gti again putney and you wanted bigger power gains what would your plans be?
