Cam Belt Change and Service

I know this topic has been rasied before but I'm after some advise because I'm amazed at how much the quotes are for a cam belt change and 60k service. I received several quotes ranging from £600 to just over £450...is this the norm?

Cambelt: £325

Water Pump: £90

Service: £175

All include labour and VAT (apart from MOT coz that's not taxable)

Basically I need to save some money somewhere because I just can't afford to pay that amount........so whats involved in a 60k service and can I do it myself? Alternativly I'll kepp shopping round.

I don't fancy doing the cambelt so I'm just gonna bite the bullet and just pay for that.

What does the service include?:

Oil Change and Filter

Plugs

Brakes

Fluids topped up (powersteering, brakes etc)

?

?

?

Any service garages in Leeds, Sheffield or Barnsley with competative prices welcome.

Thanks in advance :shades:

Where are you getting these quotes from?

Cambelt kit, including water pump from VW is about £100-£120ish. If i was you id buy the parts yourself. Say to them, "what is the best price you can do a cambelt and water pump for my Lupo Gti for?" They usually always give you a 10% discount just by asking.

Plus you get a £20-ish surcharge from VW when you return your old water pump to them! So its worth doing that.

You should be able to have the cambelt fitted for £150-£200 tops.

I get what your saying but generally its the labour cost that seeming to be pushing the price up....I've had 3 quotes so far but will keep looking.

LOL aye, so was I

I think we have all missed something here!

I was meaning, buying the parts yourself saves you money.

And as for labour, i said, you should be able to get it fitted for around £200 tops.

Sorry Tigz, i didnt look at your link before.

Two years parts and labour warranty when fitted by the dealer.

Knowing how poor the tensioners are, that's worth spending the extra IMO.

Service and MOT at the dealer is a waste of money though.

Again, IMO.

We just got ours doen at the VW dealer,

Timing Belt change inc water pump etc was £290.00 inc vat.

Miles cheaper than the local specialist and as Tigz says two year warranty.

Thanks. If I end up keeping the car then I'm gonna get this done at the stealers, it makes sense. ;)

Tis worth putting the first part of your postcode into the 'find a dealer' bit on the vw website, then give each of them a call, see what they say.

For my sport I had quotes of 400, 272.91 and 350 so it varies somewhat

Out of interest Rob, who quoted £272.91?

I've got to get mine done in the next couple of months, so I'm watching this thread with interest.

So Tigz, out of interest, would you really rather get the Cambelt done at VW themselves? I've just switched my servicing and MOT to VW rescue (local independent) so was just going to stick with them for the cambelt and water pump.

On a side note to this thread, apart from locking off the cams together, how does one lock the crank off against moving when changing the cam belt and waterpump.

Reason i ask is because me and my friend are replacing mine tomorrow.

Cheers

Pete
