The definitive Gearbox thread

if you've lost 1st, 3rd and 5th at the same time i would have thought cable adjustment, can be done from under the bonnet and takes about 1 minute. there are only 2 cables and i think the one your after is the lower one and it needs to be shortened (get someone to move the lever whilst you look at the cables), slide the collar back against the spring and push the cable in, release collar and your done

I have had issue's with 4th gear going up and down the box, the GTI has enough power/torque to skip gears, but I've changed the oil today... and 4th gear is back!

It's usally a pig to get first and reverse, even when double de-clutching......... This has also disappeared.

I used Silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil.

Hello! Swedish member asking a stupid question , were are the fill and drain plugs located on the gearbox?

Didn´t get the service manual from the previous owner(German import) And i cant find any hints or pictures anywhere.

Iv´e got a -99 Lupo 1,0

Sat at the lights today, went to select 1st gear, didn't go in. Had this happen before, usually just back into neutral then 1st again, but not this time. Cannot engage 1st, 3rd or 5th gear, but 2nd, 4th and 6th are fine sad.gif

Sounds like it could be the gear selector, gonna ring local VW specialist in the morning.

Think my Sport gearbox imploded today, was whining when I first set off, and went to put it in 5th and wouldnt go in, carried on in 4th, seemed fine, but now its stationary I can hardly get any gears at all. SO this month I need to pay my insurance, servicing both Lupos, cambelt change on the GTI and now a potential gearbox rebild!

Just got the Sport back. Total cost of work done... ...£674 :o

Partial rebuild of gearbox, new clutch and a service. Happy with that to be honest, drives brilliantly now, the release bearing was shagged and was really stiff, much easier now.

Bet the pedal box will break next week!

ElectricPandas GTI was there too, had a look at some of the parts they took out of his 'box  Was just shrapnel! Ill et him tell you about that though, especially the bill part

I should not of just read this thread when I've got a 600 mile road trip to Scotland and back at the weekend.

My gearbox is a bit tempremental for selecting 1st and 3rd. 3rd is only on the way down and first is whenever it feels like it.

The gearbox on my 2001 Lupo 1.4 S is on its way out and I need to replace it. My brother had it up on the ramp today and we noted the number 085301107 on the gearbox. But when trawling the web the 'box codes quoted are three letters. Anyone know what the code for mine would be? The Engine Number is AUA 012236 if that helps.

TIA

I have a problem with my gearbox now and i have a 8-900 mile road trip coming up a week on monday, effing typical!!!!

anyway there are no strange whines to my knowledge but when i select third mainly on the down change it seems to bounce out of gear when i lift the clutch. Which usually results in a horrible repeated thunking noise accompanied byt the gear lever shaking, as if the gear was only 'half' selected. 3rd gear has been munched once or twice so i suspect ****ed synchro's but any and all help would desperately be appreciated.....

**edit** it doesnt do it all the time and it rarely happens going up the box....any ideas?

Sorry dude, have not looked at this thread for a while! Have you got it sorted?

ive taken it to awesome and they reckon its an internal problem either synchros (as suspected) or something called a dog gear, either way it looks to be an internal problem and a re-con gearbox is the necesary fix. at least it survived scotland. it gets worse though when the oil warms up, and you really have to shove it gear to make sure it stays there.

Can it not be rebuilt? When mine was whining it was a "dog gear" problem aswell as the diff!

well my box gets taken off and re-built while another one gets re-conditioned and fitted the best qoute i've had so far is £425 fitted plus another £90 for the clutch, but that is suspiciosly cheap to me and i'm worried that theyre getting it confused with a 1.4 gearbox.

well my lupo 1.0 is buggered the worst thing is that ive only been driving for like a mounth and my cars falling apart ,althogh i can still drivbe it i cant put it in 5th at all it sounds like a metal to metal grinding sound and it sometimes jumps out of reverse, also does anyone kno were i can get a new front driver side (RIGHT) driveshaft , as i had a little accidnent and need one :) thanks

* so V-dub`s gearboxs are RUBBISH for lupo and polo

That's not a bad price, just make sure your getting a 1.6 box as the linkage is totally different! is yours a 5 or 6 speed? Just if its a 5 speed I would think that the internals would be similar to a 1.4 box so the price would be roughly the same :)

right the car is booked in for a new gearbox at awesome but i want to know if its possible to fit a 6-speed box and whats involved in changing it. i know a new linkage will obviuously be required but what about driveshafts, mounting brackets, sensors, even the ECU will that need updating?

any help much appreciated!

Right i think my gearbox is gone, however before i go and rebuild it or buy a 2nd hand one i need confirmation.

problems :

Very stiff to go into gear, all gears

crunches in reverse and other gears at random

gearbox works fine when the car is cold however when it warms up it becomes ****ed

The pedel box is fine, No whining, gears dont jump out when selected.

So your thoughts ?

its become very very very hard to drive the car.

Hi all ,

I am having gearbox issues with my lupo (sounds like the noise of a wheel bearing that has gone - rubbing noise between 0 -20mph) and have been told it's the pinion bearing most probably. I have a 1.4 16v lupo se. How can I find out the gearbox code? The engine code is BBY 160125.

Is the gearbox code symply BBY? ( I saw a similar connetion mentioned on this thread - but i'm not sure).

Also if it is BBY, would a gearbox from a 1.4 seat ibiza BBY gearbox 2003 fit and work in my car? - have seen one for £200 that looks good.

cheers

Will

Majeed- Have you adjusted the clutch cable, it might be stretched! If thats okay then it can only be the gearbox I'm afraid! It sounds like how mine was before I got it rebuilt! Consider a rebuild, might be cheaper than a second hand box and at least you know it will be okay after!

Willy- Get it rebuilt mate, as above at least you know it will be reliable!

Refer to first post, that will give you all the symptons!

Since having a new clutch fitted (at which point all my pedal box noises vanished) I have an annoying new noise which I am hoping someone can identify for me.

It's a whine which appears when cold, not immediately on start up, but sometimes as much as 10 minutes later.

It has so far always gone after a short period of time (5 mins at most I'd say).

It is not related to engine speed, only wheel speed.

And it happens both with clutch and gears engaged and with clutch disengaged.

Am I right in thinking this is a problem with the thrust bearing and it should be returned to the garage for fixing, or should I be fetching my spare gearbox sharpish?
