Hi, I currently drive a Lupo GTI 2001 5-speed model, a couple of months ago I replaced the gear box with a 2nd hand one due to having a problem with 3rd gear, now just recently the same problem has occurred on the new box where it will only ever go into 3rd gear when going from 2nd to 3rd, if I try to change down at all from say 4th to 3rd it just will not going into gear at all! So frustrated and before I go out and get a new gear box again I need some advice as to what the problem may be? Any advice is welcomed, thanks

What kind of noises do gearbox bearings makes when they are on their way out? My lupo sounds fine when i'm using the accelerator, this loudish sound comes after i take my foot off the pedal, and the engine starts breaking... only in 4th and 3rd gears though. Its not hard to put into gear at all, or ever grinds...

I wouldn't describe it as a whining sound, its more a deep low rooaar as if its uncovered. I've checked the oil, took about 0.8 to top up just the other day, was hoping this would help but, hasn't really.

Anyone?

Thanks,

Heres a link to those sounds, It is more noticeable after i take my foot off the accelerator and the engine starts braking (See my link above)

I'm pretty sure it might be a normal sound, just sure its got a lot louder in the past months

the initial whirring in the second video is just a window loose or something, not the sound of the gearbox.

Thanks

I have exactly the same problem as this. Do you only get this noise when you are in gear? Mine is doing this only when in gear, doesn't matter which. No noise in neutral or even when coasting. Seems like its only when pressure and weight is applied to through the gearbox. If I match the revs when in gear going down a hill so no weight or pressure is going through the gearbox the noise stops. It was a bit of a conundrum to everyone I took it to, no one could say exactly what it was.

But the theory is that it could be the diff, for sure gearbox problems. I will be replacing but need to find a reasonable price for one.

Does anyone know of a place that does good boxes for good prices? Will be fitting myself.

Thanks

Hello guys I'm new to the forum :)

I've recently bought a Lupo 1.4s, T reg. recently it stopped going in gears, mostly in reverse..

If the car is left in idle it does a weird ticking noise, but when I press the clutch it stops, what can it be?

Thanks for the help :)

Hey, how did it go, did you get yourself a new box?

Your prob sounds exactly the same as mine. Everything you say matches.

Noise is the clutch release bearing

Gear issue could be linkages

Hi guys.

Had my lupo checked out by a specialist gearbox mechanic. For future reference, any one who experiences hearing that noise in the future can associate it with the diff bearings inside the gearbox.

Its just beginning to get pretty annoying, new box is in the post and I'm already in the process of stripping the old one out. Got a copy of ElsaWin off ebay for 7 quid to help. Absolutely suburb bit of software!

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum.

My main gripe with my Lupo is the inability to get into reverse first time. For example clutch is pressed fully to the floor and car is put into reverse and then I get a horrible grinding noise when I lift the clutch like its not in gear. You then have to take it out of gear and do it again to finally get the car to reverse. So annoying, but not sure if it sounds like a mechanical problem?

Here's one for ya, no whining or anything like that but refuses to go into third on the down shift from 4-5 but will go into gear if u pop it into second first and then push into third. Tried rev matching too but to no avail...

Box is a gti 5 speed 01 plate, 120000 miles on the clock, going to change gearbox oil out and invest in some zx1 as well, see if it helps... Anyone ever heard of something like this?

Thanks in advance.

Matt.

I have a 1.7 sdi arosa I'm wanting to change the gearbox oil anyone any idea were the sump plug for the gearbox is and refilling cap is??

On the gearbox...

Look next to the engine sump and you will see a big plug that I'm sure you need a hex for? The top one is just above it.

Refilling cap was 17mm hex on my Lupo, couldn't shift it. I ended up taking out the reversing light switch and filling through that hole, measuring the required amount.

Just had my gearbox replaced but the changing gears is not smooth. The guy that changed the gearbox just reconnected the the two (a+B) linkage points as he found them so I think it is a gear linkage adjustment problem.

I do not have the locking jig but wondered if anyone knows what postion the gearlever needs to be locked in before tightening the linkage? My plan is to loosen off A and B and get somone to hold the lever in roughly the right place before retightening.

Anyone had any experience carrying out this adjustment?

Im not sure its definitively meant to be in the middle thats why it has the scope to be moved depending on the exact position of the gearbox. Ill try putting gearbox into neutral, undoing A + B get somone to hold the gear lever in neutral and retighten.

Let you know if it improves.

I don't think A is adjustable, it looks fixed and from when I've changed clutches on both of my old lupos the bolt labelled B was in the middle, but yeah undo bolt B and place both box and gear shifter into neutral. If anyone has a pic of their linkage it would be beneficial! I'd take one of mine but I've got the GTI Now :/

Hi, took my car to the garage today thinking my track rods were gone and they told me the noise is coming from my gearbox. I didn't really believe them so got a second opinion and they NSAID it's the same thing. First garage said the diff has gone (he made this judgement by the noise) it whines a little but only now and again and it just sounds like a rattling coming from under the car somewhere. I've sourced a perfect working gearbox and can get it fitted just wondering if anyone has had the same problem ?
