Recommended Posts

* from the Golf+ mag June 2005 issue.

tools needed: trolley jack, axle stand, wheel brace and various sizes of ratchets and spanners

FRONT

1) loosen the wheel bolts, carefully jack up the vehicle and support on axle stands, remove wheel.

2) release thebrake line from the clip on the existing damper housing, then loosen and remove 18mm headed nut and bolt.

3) under the bonnet, using a deep ring spanner, undo the 20mm (possibly 21mm) headed nut while holding the centre allen (7mm) headed damper rod.

4) remove the original spring/damper from vehicle and slide off the top mount..

5) and the nut and bearing, making sure you remember the order in which came off. Spring clamps may be required to compress spring.

6) if vehicle is new and mounts & bearings are good, these can be reused, position on new coilover unit ready to fit.

7) with unit in place secure the top nut and tighten the two lower 18mm nuts and bolts, these govern the camber of wheels which needs to be adjusted correctly.

8) to ensure both sides of the front sit at same height, measure the remaining thread and tighten wuth the c spanners (should be supplied with kit)

REAR

9) remove door panel and clips that hold rear shelf panel

10) pull off boot seal, undo the multi pointed headed screws, slid rear shelf panel out of way.

11) with the rubber cover removed, undo the 16mm top mount nut, this allows the rear beam to be dropped and spring removed

12) loosen and remove the 16mm lower damper nut and bolt and remove the damper. new spring and adjustable platform can then be bolted into place.

13) with the rubber mounts positioned onto the new damper unit, place this on the vehicle and tighten the 16mm lower nut and bolt.

14) put wheel back on and lower vehicle back to floor, refit top mount and washen, then tighten.

15) refit the rear shelf side and clip rear door panel back on.

Then take to garage to have the tracking and camber done... :)
