Hey guys

can anyone help me with direction to who can do (turbo or supercharged builds ) in the uk for the 1.6 gti Lupo or a carb set up ! Or any kits that people know of for bolt on set up thanks ! I’ve rang around and can’t seem to find where people are having their work done !! For reference I live down south in Dorset, o

I was intending to order an Up! Gti earlier this year, though I was not keen on the engine format - small capacity, three cylinders and turbocharged.  I finished up with a Lupo Gti instead and I am greatly enjoying its normally aspirated 1.6 litre engine.  I've a feeling a blown engine would spoil the car's essential character, which is largely based on a nice balance of power/chassis capability/weight. As mk2 indicates, it might be best to follow the proverbial advice of an Irishman when asked for directions - well, I wouldn't start from here.

Nought wrong with small blown engines. I just love the ford ecotec series. Fabulous engineering. Cr@p cars but super engineering. An engine that chucks out 100hp, with decent torque and you can almost lift it with one hand. Amazing.

Thanks guys tar do conversions for 5k for the 1.8t engine I’ve spoken to a company locally whogot my hopes up about. Doing work now it seems I’ve heard that they have done poor work quality on previous cars, he suggested doing a throttle bodied and lumpy cam engine does anyone know of any companies in the uk that would be helpful with this type of engine work for vws

5k for 1.8t sounds steep, donor Golf can be had for £500, but you are paying people to do the work. At least with 1.8t you can use the donor ECU and remap - if you go bodies you need aftermarket ECU - at the very least thats £400 for a basic set up + loom.

Lots of VW specialists out there, TSR are in Bridgwater Somerset - not too far a stretch from Dorset they have a long history or breathing on VW's give them a call.

If you really have your heart set on forced induction and want the best quality, suspect you need V deep pockets - Retropower in Licestershire. Currently building a Mk1 ford Escort for Gordon Murray - highly recommend the You tube films

You can buy a very nice 1.8T converted Lupo for 5k or less. Not many GTI ones about and so not many for sale (i've not seen a 1.8t GTI for sale in last 3 years afaik) and tbh converting a GTI this late in the day with them becoming rare and collectable will just be a double waste of money, the cost and the loss of value.

Well it probably won’t, but whenever you uprate anything, especially the engine, which is where most people seem to start, which you’d still need to declare btw, you then need to start thinking of every other component.

More power means more power to the gearbox, so you uprate your clutch so you can make the most of the extra power and thus keep it reliable, no point having extra power with a slipping clutch, that all comes down to reliability.

More power means more speed, so you then have to think about how to slow the speed meaning bigger/better brakes, bigger servos etc.

More power means you need better manoeuvrability, as you only go to the trouble of doing all this stuff if you intend to chuck it about a lot, that means sticky tyres, decent suspension to keep up with it, I’ll not go down the uprated bushes route coz there is a lot to be said for staying with standard ones, but rear anti roll bars, thicker front bars etc.

Again, all this needs declaring and probably 75% of it would be necessarily to keep it ‘reliable’.

Or you could just save the engine and gearbox work by sticking a 1.8 in it, 150+ in a lupo would be plenty, especially with the extra weight.

Or you could just save all that hassle and get a low mileage cupra r. Probably would end up cheaper by the time you’d finished tbh. More space, quicker as standard, good fun when played about with.

Fast reliable daily? Cupra R mk1.

Actually, yeah, I'll second that. Needs a full maintenance record though.

If you have a modified car, the insurance bumps up to near Ferrari level. If you don't tell em, they crush your car and you get a life long black mark with the central insurance database. No-one wants that.....

money wise, much cheaper in the long run to go with a different/faster car, unless you've just won the lottery :)
