mk2
does the radiator fan come on when hot? could also be a duff thermostat fan switch. overheats when moving or when stationary, or both? if only when stationary, then most likely thermostat fan switch. if both, then coolant thermostat. or could be something much worse like head gasket or cracked head, but unlikely. is also possibly plastic water pump impellor has sheared off inside the pump housing (does happen). as the engine warms up, you can feel the hoses. if the thermostat is stuck closed, the hot water wont make it to the radiator which will stay coolish or only slightly warm. if fan switch, the rad will be roasting. dont open coolant filler cap when hot! like rich says- you can see the coolant surface moving inside the header tank if pump is ok. quick diagnosis without doing any work at all!
