Reedo
I am having an issue with my rear drivers side hub. I was undoing the bolts to take the wheel off and disaster struck, the bolt snapped. The last person to do them up was a garage. C***s. I undid the other three with little success. two more broke. I have managed to get all the bolt threads out. i am now having an issue that i have bought new bolts but in two of the holes the bolt doesn't sit flush against the rim when it is on. I took a wheel bolt from the front of the car and put it in the back. i had the same issue. i then tried to put the wheel bolt back in the front where it belonged and it now doesn't fit... any ideas or advice or help would be appreciated. mk2
pic of new bolts next to old bolts? steel wheels have different angle seat heads to alloy types. Edited April 5, 2018 by mk2
Rich
hub is easy to change and nobody likes sitting at the side of the road with three wheels.
LR5V
Take the garage to small claims court for the cost of getting a new hub, bolts, taxis to and from work, time of work, stress of dealing with this, cat or dog neutering etc. I trust they only f'ed around with just the one wheel? - if they did that to a wheel what else have they done? 4 hours ago, Rich said: hub is easy to change and nobody likes sitting at the side of the road with three wheels. I hear its character building, but the rub is where the 4th wheel ends up
mk2
small claims court is all online now. its as easy as doing a paypal duspute through ebay. torquing bolts right is step one in learning how to be a mechanic. if they are professional, they'll admit they messed up. maybe they had an apprentice there who wasn't being watched closely enough. i think realistically, you need to allow them to show good faith in correcting where they went wrong. if they said that you never gave them a chance to repair their damage, that would go against you (even though the last place you'd want to fix your car is the place that messed up). but at least it'd show that you gave them the opportunity to put right where they went wrong. Rich
why are you taking the wheel bolts off anyway? the garage has just done a windy gun job with no copper grease and dirty bolts, I have done it loads of times. I will do it again doubtlessly, I am very quick and adept at taking snapped wheel bolts out of hubs, I must have done 40k in mine on three up front before I was arsed and another snappage forced me to do it. Ill grab some picks when i can but i paid £4.47 for the new bolt from vw so it deffo the right one. 16 hours ago, Rich said: hub is easy to change and nobody likes sitting at the side of the road with three wheels. Im planning on a whole refresh but until i can get another axle i wont be doing it. unless you have a complete gti rear axle? haha 11 hours ago, LR5V said: I trust they only f'ed around with just the one wheel? - if they did that to a wheel what else have they done? Tomorrow the car is going up on jack stands and i will check all the wheels. theres only one guy i trust to do work on my gti and thats AUTOSHACK in Suffolk. Bit of a drive for me and hes a VW specialist. Hes worked on Claytons tornado red gti a bit aswell. 11 hours ago, mk2 said: small claims court is all online now. its as easy as doing a paypal duspute through ebay. torquing bolts right is step one in learning how to be a mechanic. if they are professional, they'll admit they messed up. maybe they had an apprentice there who wasn't being watched closely enough. i think realistically, you need to allow them to show good faith in correcting where they went wrong. if they said that you never gave them a chance to repair their damage, that would go against you (even though the last place you'd want to fix your car is the place that messed up). but at least it'd show that you gave them the opportunity to put right where they went wrong. It is a garage where my mate works so its a touch awkward. I have made him buy new wheel bolts for that wheel. 9 hours ago, Rich said: why are you taking the wheel bolts off anyway? the garage has just done a windy gun job with no copper grease and dirty bolts, I have done it loads of times. I had a knock at the back end but I found it to be a loose bolt on the rear damper which connects to the rear axle. Thats what me and my other mate think. Would it be worth taping out the threads to clean them up?
Rich
for the ease and effort, just replace it. they're not specific, worst case you have to change the abs ring over if you have it.

Have you done it before on a gti? if so did you get a genuine hub? or aftermarket?
Rich
go down to the scrappy and take a genuine one from a lupo/arosa/6n2 and when you get one off in a oner then slap some moly grease in and fit it to yours. it isn't a gti specific part, disc or drum so it is relatively common.
