Mobieus_uk
Sons cam belt went the other week, in the process of removing the head, then found out I need extended spline bits for the head bolts, anyway car is a bora but though might be interesting to post pics of the damage once the head is off, good learning curve for me cos cant mess it up more than it already is
Mobieus_uk
finally got the head off what a pain that was, cam is removed as well, valve not quite lining up as hoped so most of the valves are trash, just need to work out how to remove the dam things
Mobieus_uk
Well all the valves are borked all came out with encouragment but one came out with the brass bit on it, it the worse valve and had to hammer the crap out of it, not sure now if because the brass sleeve has come out the head is written off, can they be replaced? Sausage
Looks like a tdi, it will be cheaper and easier to find a 2nd hand head for it, with or without injectors. Heads arent expensive the injectors are. Valve guides can be bought, but need pressing in and probably seats recut.
Skezza
Cambelt failure?
Sausage
Most times the pistons will be ok and you can just stick another head on it or rebuild your borked one, but sometimes the pistons have taken enough of a wack to damage them and then it shows up sooner or later. My nephews SDI caddy developed a metallic rattle that came and went deep in the engine. If the car was leaning to the right it went away, otherwise it sounded horrible. Sump off revealed the gudgeon pin hanging out of number 2 piston. head off to get pistons out revealed previous valve contact from a cambelt failure that had happened under a previous owner. The piston had developed a crack around the gudgeon pin and the pin retaining area had broken off allowing the pin to slide and hit the bore wall, the pin had hammered a deep line up the bore wall. We slapped a new piston in it and he got another 3 years use out of it.
Mobieus_uk
Pistons look fine, so far the list is set of valves, valve guides, valve seals, head gasket and cambelt, much cheaper to rebuild the head as the main costs are head gasket and cambelt which is needed either way, if it survives the rebuild is another matter, but always wanted to strip a engine down, worst comes to worse will just scrap the car, engine is a 1.9 pd150
Skezza
Good lesson this though for future work.
Mobieus_uk
was looking forward to this project, problem is my son lost his job so has no funds for the repair, insurance was due and they wanted £1200, road tax was due shortly after that so as he couldn't afford it and couldn't be bothered to get it off the road onto the driveway he had no other option other than to scrap it
Sausage
Well that's a shame, the injectors could have got £140, the pistons and rods another £100, there's probably hundreds more gone down the scrap yard too.
Mobieus_uk
if i had the space would have stripped then scrapped but too much going on atm and the car was just a problem that needed to go away
