Hi all,

My name is Thomas. I am currently in the area of Portsmouth driving my 2000 VW Lupo 1.0. It's light blue. I can get more pictures of it up if  you all like?

It is 100% standard because insurance as it is my first car so costs are sky high! I love my little Lupo and really have a soft spot in my heart for it. Haven't even named her yet. It's only got 120,000 on the clock which isn't bad. Bought her from Southampton for 500 pounds and is a great motor. I want to start slowly converting it into my little project. I have little ideas for it such removing the bumper strip and doing the colour matching behind the badges and such. I'm sure most people here can give me alot more ideas.

My car has a few little niggles such as the rear wiper wash doesn't work, It leaks quite visibly but there is no rust so that is my little project for the summer is to fix that.

Little story behind my name is that SMC stands for Southsea Motor Club which is where I do fun little events. I did one event in my Lupo but now can't. I'll be looking out for more Lupo's/ Arosa's around my area.

Welcome along to the forum Thomas!

If you happen to need some advice on parts or a price of a discounted, genuine VW part. Just let me know.

Regards, Dale (Lupoboz).

Thanks Dale.

Right now my car isn't in too bad of shape, gave it a full service myself only thing I haven't done is spark plugs but they don't need changing yet. So I changed the fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and I have changed the oil and coolant. Serviced the brakes a bit and so on.

I do need to paint the bits of repair work on my car which is how it was when I bought it. It has primer down but not the colour but I have that, just waiting for a warm dry day now.

Can anyone advise me on a small problem I have with my car. The rear window squirter doesn't work, there is a leak in the pipes clearly as it drips through to the ground. Does anyone have a solution how to fix this?

Regarding the leaky rear washer pipe. You can find the broken hose, (which I suspect is where the hose goes through the boot lid grommet, a known pinch point) slide some heat shrink tubing over it, heat the pipe with the heat shrink upon it gently, thus sealing the pipe, no more leaks. Be careful not to singe the pipe (let it get too hot) otherwise the leak will appear again. I do keep heat shrink tubing in stock. Although you can buy little packs of it in Halfords for a few pounds.

Regards, Dale.

That's great. It could be there but it drains from the underneath of the car just infront of rear wheel.

I'll take a look. I have some heat shrink in the garage. Would you say 122,000 on a 2000 1.0 Lupo is alot? I only got the car at about 121,000 for £500 ish.

The break in the hose could be futher down, whereby the leak is exiting in front of the rear wheel. It'll be one of those jobs, that'll be, "seek and you shall find". Bearing in mind that your Lupo is now 16 years old. 122k miles is below average mileage. Average mileage would be around 160k.

Does the gearbox feel okay to you? And is the clutch pedal travel quite high? As Lupo's that have been driven hard, do suffer from gearboxes, especially around this sort of mileage. If the above is fine, then you may have got a bargain. It's hard to say without seeing the car for myself. If your ever in Petersfield, Hampshire pop in and see me, as I work at White Rose VW, near the railwat station, pop in for a chat!

Regards, Dale.

Thanks, My parents bought a Golf from you so know exactly where it is.

I am currently finding the leak, it's towards the front more so is likely to be the pipe popped off or broken. Seems an easy fix for that part. I'll keep investigating.

Although its 16 years old I can honestly say I feel my car is in good shape. The Gear box has a slight whine in 5th and we all know these sounds and issues. I did have it checked at a gearbox specialist but they said it appeared to be fine. Sometimes 1st gear seems hard to select going from 3rd to first for example while slowing down but that is likely to be because the gear ratios in this car are rather short. The clutch doesn't seem bad at all either 50/50 travel I would argue, the bite is nice and easy to feel.

I forgot this problem, The temperature gauge is really temper mental, majority of the time it doesn't work. Won't read anything. I suspect it's a loose connection somewhere but these cars hold their temperature really well. Never had it seem too hot at all.

That all sounds good to me! As for the intermittent temperature reading. I suspect you'd require a new coolant temperature sensor, as these do fail quite a bit. Let me know if you'd like a price for one.

I'll do some sourcing. It's not a major issue the temperature thing yet. I'm just trying to get everything working.

Back to the rear wiper wash, Think I've found where it's coming from. It is coming from the left side in roughly the middle of the car and just leaks through a drain hole I assume and down the left side of the car underneath. Don't have a clue how to get to these part of the pipes.

Fixed the rear wiper wash today @Lupoboz. Was a pipe fallen out in the end but a right pain to find under all the trim. So that's that sorted but with everything you fix you find another problem. I ended up finding that the fan doesn't turn on even after the temperature light comes on. And getting a voltmeter across it it shows nothing so theres a problem there but I've driven at least 2000 miles with it like that we assume and haven't had any problems.

Edit: Fuses are all fine.

Hi and welcome.

When your insurance is due up please feel free to drop me a line. I'd be only too pleased to try and help out.

Regards,

Dan.

Thanks Dan, I'll let you know, my insurance isn't due until about March next year I think so have a while yet but hopefully I can get a deal to get me off my black box as it's a pain right now. I don't drive like a yob at all but yet my age and stereotype has to make me suffer :(

As for the cooling fans not coming on. The cure will be the coolant temperature sensor. You already know the symptoms as the temperature gauge doesn't always read correctly, which shows that the sensor has an intermittent fault. Replace this sensor, £22 including postage (comes with the seal) and you'll find that both problems will potentially be solved.

Thanks, I don't doubt your expertise. I will have a check over more thoroughly but sounds like it may have to be the temperature sensor.

Would that explain not having any current going through to the fan then? As effectively it would be a variable resistor I assume to make it go on and off.

Yes, it would, because, if the switch is fautly, then (when the vehicle is above standard operating temperature) there would'n't be any feed going from the switch to the fan. Some models have a seperate switch, which is actually screwed to the radiator body itself. Let me know the regsitration number of your Lupo, then I'll be able to check this for you. PM me if preferred.
